GBM Union disappointed after Sellafield not mentioned in Spring Budget
The GBM Union say they're disappointed in the government after Sellafield's nuclear reactor wasn't mentioned in the Spring Budget.
They've been calling for the site to host more nuclear reactors, saying it will provide energy and prosperity for not just Cumbria, but for the whole country.
Building, installing and operating a series of small modular reactor at the Cumbrian site, next to the decommissioned Sellafield power station, would have a massive benefit for the local, regional and national economies, the union says.
With the cost-of-living crisis hitting hard and set to get even worse with the conflict in Ukraine, GMB reckons only new nuclear and defence spending can give the UK the energy and security required.
Hazel Nolan, GMB Regional Secretary, said:
“The cost-of-living crisis is hitting people in Cumbria hard - and it’s about to get much worse.
“We face a massive energy price rise in April, while the invasion of Ukraine will hugely affect the UK’s energy security and supply.
“Rishi Sunak must use his Spring Statement to fully commit to new nuclear in Moorside.
“New nuclear isn’t just about Wylfa and Sizewell C.
‘The Moorside site neighbouring Sellafield is available to be a perfect home for the new Small Modular Reactors that will deliver energy and prosperity for both the region and the nation.
“Moorside in Cumbria is NDA owned and is already earmarked for a number of SMRs.
“High streets in West Cumbria are being silently boarded up as the continued delay by the Conservatives is scuppering jobs for the north.”
