Greg Stewart denied 10-man Hamilton a morale-boosting victory with a late strike as Dundee salvaged a point from Saturday's Scottish Premiership encounter at Dens Park. Accies, despite losing Dougie Imrie to a 54th-minute red card for a stamp on Stewart, looked set to end a run of four successive defeats with a win as new player-manager Martin Canning headed them in front with just five minutes left. However, they were not able to hold on as Stewart struck with two minutes to go to earn his side a 1-1 draw and extend their unbeaten run to six games. The in-form hosts made two changes from the side which came from behind to sink St Mirren in their last outing, with striker David Clarkson and winger Alex Harris starting in place of injured duo Iain Davidson and Gary Harkins. For Hamilton, Ziggy Gordon came back after a long spell out injured while Jason Scotland started. Darian MacKinnon, meanwhile, was suspended as Accies sought to turn their poor form around. And the visitors could have been a goal up in less than 60 seconds as Ali Crawford laid off to Anthony Andreu, who curled an effort off the inside of Scott Bain's left-hand post with the home keeper beaten. The ball somehow stayed out but Accies kept the pressure on with the next attack soon after, with a low ball into the area from Gordon being scrambled away by a desperate Dundee defence. At the other end, Dundee midfielder Jim McAlister had a half-chance but his angled shot was deflected wide of the target. After 36 minutes, the home team were appealing for a penalty when they claimed a ball into the box had come off Stephen Hendrie's hand, but referee Crawford Allan waved play on. But on the stroke of half-time Hamilton really ought to have broken the deadlock. Scotland stayed strong as he forged his way into the box holding off Dundee pair James McPake and Kevin Thomson, but with the goal at his mercy, the Trinidad and Tobago hitman blazed over from 10 yards. Dundee handed new boy Stephen McGinn his first taste of life in a Dark Blues jersey as he came on along with Luka Tankulic for Clarkson and Kevin Thomson as part of a double substitution at the break. But it was still Accies who still came closest to going ahead as Scotland again found himself clean through on goal, only to be foiled by Bain who raced off line to rescue the hosts. Then, on 54 minutes, Hamilton were reduced to 10 men when Imrie was sent packing for an off-the-ball stamp on Stewart, leaving Allan with no option but to show him a straight red card. Dundee quickly sought to make their numerical advantage count but Stewart saw his low effort comfortably saved by Accies keeper Michael McGovern. And then, with time running out, the hosts were stunned as Canning rose in the air to nod home Crawford's corner and send the visitors wild with delight. It was not enough to earn Hamilton the win, though, as three minutes later Stewart levelled with a bit of class, cutting inside and bending an unstoppable strike high into the far corner past McGovern.
