Mighty disappointment: Weather forces postponement of final Deerstalker race

It has attracted hundreds of runners from all over the country to the Tweed Valley almost annually for more than a decade - providing an out-of-season boost to local hotels, shops and other accommodation providers.

And, following recent interruptions caused by the Covid pandemic, this year's event is set to be the last.

But, it's been confirmed, a number of weather warnings have forced the cancellation of this weekend's Mighty Deerstalker at Traquair, near Innerleithen.

With up to 40cm of snow and strong winds forecast over the hills at one stage, organisers say they had no other option but to postpone the famous foot race.

The final farewell event - which sees runners don Tweed and fancy dress - is now being rescheduled for December the 2nd.

An email issued by Rat Race HQ states: "We’ve tried to find alternatives and revisited the event site and our plans to see if we can work around this weather. But it’s becoming increasingly clear that we are out of viable options.

"We’ve also thought about canning the party and camping and just operating the run, but to offer a diluted Deerstalker as its farewell outing doesn’t seem like a fitting end to this legendary event.

"In tandem with that, the likely snowfall will make our car parking field inoperable, even with the extensive track matting we already put down to alleviate slippery conditions.

"Of course, there is another fundamental truth here, which is that a majority of you simply may not be able to get to the event."

A Yellow weather warning for snow remains in place until 2pm on Friday, and more wintry weather is forecast - with a fresh snow warning issued for Saturday.

The email, sent to those taking part, goes on: "I know many of you will be as gutted as we are to be missing out on Deerstalker this weekend. Please know that we have not taken this decision lightly.

"Your understanding on this is massively appreciated and I want you to know we are committed to bringing you the very best Deerstalker celebration in December.

"I know that many of you will have booked accommodation and made significant plans to get to Innerleithen from all over the country. We’re acting on the best forecasting info we can access, including paid advice from the Met Office forecasters and we have your best interests in mind here.

"This weather can’t be helped and whilst it is a huge inconvenience for all of you and for us, I’d ask that you also spare a thought for the local providers - pubs, accommodation and other tourist services - who typically enjoy a real bounce from you all on Deerstalker weekend. With many rural communities likely to be cut off in the coming week, they are in for a hard time this March."
