THANKS TO ALL OUR SUPERHEROES
How you transformed a garden. And a life.
Racing along the pier after school. Window shopping in the high street. Or just sitting on the bed talking about boys. It's a fundamental part of growing up. But not for Berwick teenager Kelis Bloomfield. Every ounce of her energy is spent just trying to get a breath. No family meals or sweet treats for her. Nutrition is supplied through a nasal tube, as a reaction to any food group could put her life at risk within minutes. Kelis has suffered from extreme allergies all her life, meaning long spells in specialised hospital units, far from home. She's missed out on a normal childhood, on school and, as she enters her teenage years, on a vital social life. With her bedroom wall to ceiling medical equipment, there's not even standing space for pals to visit. As Dad Stewart says "At 13, your parents shouldn't be your best friends."
On Superhero Day, we appealed for your help to turn a steep bank of weeds at the side of Kelis's house, into a garden she could enjoy with friends, and a space she could call her own.
And help you did! Thanks to everyone who donated precious time, money and materials, Kelis's garden is transformed. Along with her life.

Before work started, the garden was one long slope, a tangle of weeds and rubbish.
