The Armley Gyratory in Leeds has now reopened following a burst water main this morning.

The excess water has been cleared and debris on the road has also been removed.

It caused serious delays through the city centre this morning, with the police and council setting up diversions to keep as much traffic away from the area as possible.

West Yorkshire Police would like to thank motorists for their patience this morning whilst this incident has been dealt with as it has caused significant disruption on the surrounding roads

A Yorkshire Water spokesperson said:

“We would advise motorists to avoid the Armley Gyratory if possible due to a burst water main near Armley prison on Canal Street which is causing water to flow onto the Gyratory. As a result, the Gyratory has been partially closed which is causing major traffic tailbacks in all directions including the M621.

"We are working with the emergency services who are on the scene, with the police helping to divert traffic and the fire service pumping water off the road surface. Water supplies are slowly returning to nearby homes and businesses affected by the burst and should be back to normal very soon.

"We would like to apologise for this major disruption and will provide further updates throughout the day.”
