After Radio Aire told you about the appeal launched for a terminally ill veteran who's had his life savings stolen - Jack Walker has thanked the people of Leeds who listened to his story and helped put a smile back on his face.

"There are no words you can put together to appreciate what they’ve done, so very very grateful, exceptionally grateful, I thank them very very much from the bottom of my heart."

The 83 year old served in the Coldstream guards for 12 years. His friend Phil set up a page in his name after thieves took the nearly ÂŁ4000 Jack had saved from his pension.

His aim was to restore Jack’s faith in humanity.

"Literally over a few day’s he’s been overwhelmed with good will which is what I really wanted and we’ve also managed – between us all – to replace all the money that he had taken."

Total strangers have been sending Jack cards to show they care.

Jack says he was devastated when it happened and hopes whoever stole his money realises the pain they've caused.

"I learnt I had terminal cancer in my right lung, so I’m not in a good way. I’d saved a long time for that money, I was horrified, it upset me deeply, I just didn’t know which way to turn.

"I’m trying to put it to the back of my mind, I just hope the people who have taken it realise just what they have done."
