With the 2016 Rio Olympics just two days away, Dogs Trust has named a litter of six-week-old Chihuahua puppies after five top Team GB athletes, in the hope that they will bring their namesakes plenty of luck when the games begin.

The five puppies, who have been named after Leeds’ sporting heroes – triathletes Alistair and Jonny Brownlee, boxer Nicola Adams, diver Alicia Blagg and gymnast Nile Wilson, were handed into the rehoming centre as an unwanted litter, and staff have been caring for them round-the-clock to help make sure they are happy, healthy and in tip top condition before they cross the finish line into homes of their own.

Luckily, the pups are already on a winning streak, having each won the hearts of loving families of their own and, after getting the fabulous five started with plenty of training and socialisation, staff will soon be passing the torch to their new owners, just in time for the Olympics!

Amanda Sands, Rehoming Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Leeds comments,

“Our Olympic puppies may be on the small side, but they are certainly mighty when it comes to their personalities. We reckon they could give their athlete namesakes a real run for their money, as they are such energetic bundles of fun who love nothing more than chasing each other around or having a bit of a playful tussle over their toys.”

“Like any athletes, the puppies will need time to continue their training and socialisation in their new homes but I know they will make wonderful additions to their sport-mad families who can spend time playing lots of games with their new best friends. We hope the puppies will have front row seats on their cosy sofas in time to cheer on their namesakes in Rio and that they bring all the athletes lots of luck for the competition!”
