Should Leeds Squares Be Smoke Free?

Published 2nd Feb 2015

Two city squares in Bristol have become Britain's first major public outdoor spaces to go smokefree today.

The locations on Bristol's harbourside are both popular with families and the ban on lighting up is a trial to see if it can work.

A major report last year by former health minister Lord Darzi suggested banning smoking in public spaces and parks as has been done in New York, Toronto and Hong Kong

Fiona Andrews is director of Smokefree South West, which initiated the voluntary pilot and expect it to police itself, "These city centre squares are often full of children playing and this pilot will provide a smokefree environment for kids and their families to enjoy."

The smokefree zone will be promoted throughout the squares with signs that thank people for keeping Bristol smokefree, healthy and clean.

But how would such a move go down in Leeds? Radio Aire's been out to Millennium Square to find out.
