Spring Grant Round 2014
Cash for Kids distributed £10k to needy children in Leeds & West Yorkshire.
Our spring grant round was the first for 2014, and received a huge amount of applications. We are please to announce the following successful applicants:
Little Hiccups - £3,930.73
Little Hiccups are a non-profit organisation set up by parents of children with special needs based in Rothwell, Leeds. They run groups for parents & carers to communicate & support each other whilst their children can play in a safe environment. They run monthly days out for all the families & want to fund an all-terrain wheelchair which can be loaned to families. These wheelchairs enable children to go on grass, sand, mud... all over! Cash for Kids have agreed to fund one all-terrain wheelchair!
The Conservation Volunteers - £1,038
The Conservation Volunteers run woodland-based away days from their Centre in South Leeds to benefit children living in Leeds. They applied to Cash for Kids for funding towards two fully-funded foster family away days. These away days help families who are fostering a child/children, and helps the whole family spend time together and bond. Cash for Kids thought it was fantastic that money had already been raised towards these away-days.
ASBAH (Association for Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus) - £500
ASBAH provide support for children and adults with Spina Bifida and or Hydrocephalus, and their families and carers living in North and West Yorkshire. ASBAH expressed how rare it is for the children, families & carers to get together with other families - and share experiences and bond. Cash for Kids awarded £500 which will allow twelve families to visit Lineham Farm for the day.
St Gemma's Hospice - £1,000
Young People's Service at St Gemma's Hospice supports children who are living with someone who is terminally ill, or have experienced bereavement due to terminal illness. They support children and families in Leeds. The Young People's Service applied for funding for 50 children to attend 'The Memory Project' which is a workshop for children experiencing bereavement. Cash for Kids are supporting their application, and providing funding towards this workshop.
Horsforth Children's Services - £200
The Childrens Centre support disadvantaged children & their families living in Horsforth, helping them to lead a healthy happy life style. The Centre currently run a weekly project called Family Fun. They want to ensure that these sessions can continue, but have struggled to obtain funding. Cash for Kids have agreed to purchase enough equipment to ensure that the sessions can continue for at least another year.
Leeds Children's Charity - £250
Leeds Children's Charity provide free residential breaks for disadvantaged & socially excluded children living in West Yorkshire. They support nearly 500 underprivileged children each year by providing a short break at the Leeds Childrens Holiday Centre. Cash for Kids are supporting them by purchasing essential items for their kitchen, which children will use when learning how to cook healthy snacks and meals. Items such as baking trays, pans, a toaster, cutlery etc
Children's Assessment Unit at Pinderfields Hospital - £300
The children on the ward can stay from 1 hour to 24 hours or more. Children can come to Pinderfields from Wakefield and the surrounding cities. There are games for younger children, but nothing to keep the older children occupied, and to also distract children from sometimes painful procedures. Cash for Kids are purchasing 6 hand-held DVD players to have on the ward.
Sunshine & Smiles Leeds Down Syndrome Network - £466
Sunshine & Smiles are a support network for children and young people who have Down Sydrome, and their families living in Leeds. Their aims are to improve the lives and opportunities of children and young people with Down Sydrome by offering regular groups and activities, individual support and advocacy for families, raising awareness and challenging preconceptions in the wider community. Sunshine & Smiles have started a new group for the older children & would like to purchase some equipment such as table tennis, Nintendo Wii. Cash for Kids are providing £466 worth of funding towards these items.
Jenna Wilkinson - £2,240
Jenna lives in Woodlesford in Leeds and has a life-limiting condition called Polymicrogyria. She suffers from epileptic fits, has cerebral palsy, severe learning disabilities, global developmental delays & ataxia (imbalance). the life expectancy of a child with these symptoms is 3 months, and Jenna is now 3 years old. Jenna's mother explained that Jenna cannot venture out any further than their garden, and she would like to transform the garden into a safe-haven for Jenna for the summer. Her mum has already exhausted savings paying for a fence, but needs professionals to clear concrete & tree stumps. Cash for Kids have agreed to help get the garden transformed & awarded £2,240.
