The Lionesses' bid for World Cup glory has ended in defeat to Spain.

Olga Carmona's first half goal sealed a 1-0 win and the historic trophy for Spain.

The result was secured despite a heroic penalty from Mary Earps for England in the second half of the game in Sydney.

Thousands were in Australia's national stadium to watch the match and millions more packed out fan zones and events in the UK.

Journey to the final

England's journey to the Women's World Cup final started back in July.

We got in some experts from Astley and Buckshaw Junior Football Club in Lancashire to give us the lowdown on how the big tournament would work:

Since then England finished top of Group D, beating Denmark, China and Haiti to secure their place in the knock-out stages.

The Lionesses continued their winning streak beating Nigeria on penalties in the round of 16, and securing a 2-1 victory over Colombia in the quarter-final to get their spot in the semi-final.

The European Champions then had to take on co-hosts Australia in the penultimate game of the tournament to secure a spot in their first World Cup final, something they did with ease, sailing through to the final with a 3-1 win.
