The former chief exec of Thornaby Football Club says a decision to axe the entire women's section was "not taken lightly".

It was announced on Sunday all female teams would be given the boot due to "financial constraints".

This lead to a massive backlash on social media after it emerged over 100 players would be without any club.

Trevor Wing has today (Tues 12th June) issues a statement about what happened.

He says the decision was made with the club's long-term stability in mind.

Adding the move followed "extensive discussions and deliberation with all stakeholders" and that it was financially unsustainable to have both a men's and women's first team.
