The mother who fell through a hole on Blackpool's Central Pier is facing a recovery which could take months.

The woman, who wishes to remain nameless, plunged more than 30 feet onto the sand below at around 4pm on August 6 breaking her arm and four vertebrae.

She is currently in hospital recovering from a surgery undertaken to aid her injuries.

Speaking to us in a broadcast exclusive, her close friend Steve Taylor explains that he set up a fundraiser to support the mother and her two children while she is unable to work.

Steve tells us that while she is recovering it is a slow process and may take months: "She's still in bed mainly.

"They actually managed to get her out of bed for the first time in ten days to sit out for half an hour but the pain was quite bad.

"Ultimately she's getting there, she was quite tearful with me when Steve visited and she's still in quite a lot of pain."

Steve explains that its had a huge impact on the whole family: "The whole thing is really shocking. I mean queuing up for the wheel on a pier you don't expect to suddenly fall through it.

"I think the biggest problem really is that the kids had already walked across the same part and there is a lot of guilt from them feeling like they should have noticed it was loose or something was wrong."

The mother, who had been visiting from Manchester, had recently lost her husband sepsis and had been supporting her two children alone.

Now unable to work, Steve hopes that the fundraiser will go some way to easing some of the stress they will face while she will be recovering up to "four months"

In a statement Blackpool Council said: "Given that it is an-going investigation we cannot comment further at this time.”
