Get to know Absolute Radio's Danielle Perry
From what got her into music to her No Repeat Guarantee exception
The wonderful Danielle Perry is here on Absolute Radio every weekday from 7pm-10pm, playing you the best tracks from the 60s to now, getting you through the evening! We caught up with the presenter with our handy Q&A, so you can get to know Danielle a bit better...
From what song would be her exception to the No Repeat Guarantee, to her go-to decade for music, and even her favourite thing about presenting and her biggest Absolute Radio highlight, find out more about our very own Danielle Perry, including when to catch her on air and how.
Who were the first band that got you into music?
"It was Motown. I'd listened to Michael Jackson which took me down a rabbit hole of Motown, Diana Ross, Quincy Jones and it grew from there. Everything and anything followed. My first three gigs were Michael Jackson at Wembley, followed by Massive Attack at the Bournemouth International Centre (first time I heard sub bass.. Life changed) and then The Levellers. Very different!"
What is your most memorable gig?
It was an easy one for Danielle, telling us: "Bjork at the Royal Opera House with a live orchestra in 2001. Life changing."
Who's the best guest you've had on the show and why?
Of course, it's tough to narrow it down, with Danielle telling us: "There's been too many to chose one. I've been lucky to meet and interview some incredible artists..."
To name a few, she then continued: "Michael Stipe had such presence and poise; Brett Anderson was a fantastic raconteur - so in tune with his artistry; Bjork had been up all night at a house party; Damon Albarn won't take any stupid questions... And Liam Gallagher backstage at the Q Awards - you'll have to watch the video for that on my socials. Still annoyed he didn't really get my sarcasm on the Kasabian lyric comment. Fun times."
What can we expect from your show on Absolute Radio?
She told us: "Company on a weeknight from a fellow music lover. It's packed full of stuff you know but I slip in a few new records to build their familiarity... I'm the start of the process for new music on the radio so I'll try and contextualise it, and why we think it's great before I hit play. Fairly dry humour, a companion between the hours of 7pm and 10pm."
Which song could be your exception to the No Repeat Guarantee?
The age old question, Danielle revealed: "Johnny Cash and his cover of 'Hurt' is one of the most striking pieces we play on the NRG. I mean, the whole country would be on their knees weeping but it is a moment of complete mastery."
LISTEN: Johnny Cash 'Hurt'
Which Absolute decade is your go-to?
"Really love the 60s. On Rayo we have a 50s version too which is ace, but my formative years were the 1990s."
Find out everything you need to know about Rayo here.
What’s been your biggest highlight from your time at Absolute Radio?
With some of the biggest names in music dropping by Absolute Radio, Danielle simply told us: "It's the interviews."
Giving us some of her highlights, she told us: "Josh Homme, Michael Kiwanuka, the others mentioned above (best guests) and I'm really proud of setting up the opportunity for self-releasing artists on my show.
"It's so important to keep music vibrant, varied and not just a slipstream for the lucky ones. There is so much talent out there going unnoticed and I'm not going to change the world but I am hopefully going to create a platform which could help an artist or band get a booking at a festival, which in turn will get their music to more people, who will then buy the album, and then perhaps come to the tour... The cycle continues."
What is your favourite thing about presenting?
Ever-honest, the Absolute Radio presenter told us: "I never meant to be a radio presenter. It kind of happened by accident but I love the intimacy of it. The theatre of the mind."
