Keane frontman Tom Chaplin has told Absolute Radio his dad wasn’t initially a fan of his band until he heard their ‘Hopes and Fears’ anthem ‘Bedshaped.’

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of their blockbuster debut album ‘Hopes and Fears’, Keane’s Tom Chaplin and Tim Rice-Oxley guested on Tim Listening’s Party on Absolute Radio last night (12th May) to discuss the record track by track.

While chatting about third single and album closer ‘Bedshaped’, Tom enthused to Tim: “I mean, I just love that song on almost every level really. I still love singing it live.

“Talking about people around us not really believing in us. Like my dad was always…”

When Tim chipped in “Supportive?”, Tom laughed: “No, the opposite! But at the same time, looking back, I think they just didn’t understand the world that we were in or trying to be in.

“But I remember first playing that song to my dad. I remember him saying, ‘the lyrics to these are actually really good!’ And I’m thinking, ‘oh! This is something a bit different to hear actually him (say that).”

Tom continued: “Of course, actually, weirdly enough, the lovely thing was that once we became successful, and they could see the world that we were trying to occupy they’ve been our biggest supporters and it’s been lovely to see.

“But, yeah, they found it very alien and very difficult to understand to begin with.”

You can listen to the full episode of Keane on Tim’s Listening Party below where they talk about their embryonic days, how they nearly took an electronic music route, the influence of The Smiths and Depeche Mode, creating their mega-hit ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ and much more.
