'Three Lions' storms up singles chart ahead of England's Euro 2020 semi-final
Could Baddiel, Skinner and the Lightning Seeds reach Number 1 again?!
Last updated 6th Jul 2021
David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and the Lightning Seeds’ ‘Three Lions’ is storming up the UK singles chart ahead of England’s Euro 2020 semi-final against Denmark.
Buoyed by England’s 4-0 thrashing of Ukraine in Rome on Saturday, fans have been downloading and streaming the timeless 1996 football anthem in their droves.
According to the latest Official Singles Chart Update, ‘Three Lions’ has climbed 16 places to Number 6 and it’s certain to gain significant momentum if England beat Denmark at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday night (7th July).
If ‘Three Lions’ tops the final singles chart on Friday, it would be the first time in the Official Chart’s 69-year history that a song has scored five spells at Number 1 with the same artist line-up.
‘Three Lions’ had two spells at Number 1 upon its initial release during Euro ’96, and the ’98 rework also reached the chart summit during the 1998 World Cup in France. It climbed to Number 1 for a third time when England reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
However, the song’s climb up the chart this time could be thwarted by Official Charts Company rules designed to prevent old songs from dominating the weekly countdown.
When songs are over three years old, they have to notch up 1,200 audio/video streams to equal one sales unit compared to 600 for a new track.
On Saturday morning ahead of the England vs. Ukraine match, our very own Frank Skinner played ‘Three Lions’ during his Absolute Radio show and treated us to a singalong.

Frank and David also went viral during the England vs. Germany game at Wembley last week when they shared a selfie at the stadium:
Elsewhere on this week’s Official Singles Chart Update, Fat Les’ ‘Vindaloo’ is at Number 40 and New Order’s World Cup 1990 song 'World In Motion' is at Number 57.

Goldie Lookin Chain
Comedy rappers Goldie Lookin Chain sponsored Newport County AFC's football kit for their games in the Football Association of Wales Premier Cup in 2004. Jake Bugg
Back in 2017, the then 23-year-old Jake Bugg signed a 10-month sponsorship deal with his beloved Notts County. He told BBC Nottingham: "It's amazing, to see your team out there playing nice football is great. For them to do it with your name on the front is even better. I'm sure there are places I've been like Germany or Brazil that might not have heard of them. It's nice to get the team's name out there."

In 1999, chart-conquering dance titan Fatboy Slim invested £100,000 into his then impoverished local side Brighton and Hove Albion. In return, his Skint Records label logo was emblazoned on the front of the club's shirts for the next season.

They look amazing! We can't thank you enough."

Enter Shikari
Electro-rockers Enter Shikari sponsored sixth tier football club St Albans City FC for the 2020 and 2021 season. "Growing up I was passionate about two things: football and music," said Enter Shikari bassist Chris Batten. SACFC lead the way with their community outreach programs and Enter Shikari couldn't be more proud to embark on a partnership with the club."
