Watch: Skinner and Baddiel’s Three Lions gets a festive makeover

'Three Lions on a sleigh, with She-Lions' inspiration…'

Frank Skinner and David Baddiel have released a revamped version of their football classic ‘Three Lions’ ahead of the men’s World Cup, titled Three Lions (It’s Coming Home for Christmas)’.

The new lyrics reference the Lioness’ win at UEFA Women's Euro 2022 this summer.

Baddiel and Skinner said that while their famous “football’s coming home” refrain had been made redundant by the Lionesses’ win in the Euros this summer, they would “give it one more go” for "the blokes".

Speaking on The One Show on Thursday, comedian and Absolute Radio DJ Skinner said: ““We could not resist the fact that the World Cup was at Christmas, and people have said in the past that football songs are a little bit tacky, and obviously Christmas songs are a bit tacky.

“In maths two negatives make a positive, so we think there’s so much tacky in this that it’s going to be a classic.”

Baddiel added: “The Lionesses brought it home, football came home and some would say that’s the end of the song, stop singing it. But we decided to give it one more go on the basis that the blokes have not brought it home.”

This year’s men’s World Cup, which kicks off on Sunday, is controversially being held in Qatar – a fact that the pair reference in the rewritten lyrics.

They keep it light though, singing: ‘When they decided on Qatar/ Should have checked VAR/ It’s too hot/ And too far…’

Other lyrics include, ‘Three Lions on a sleigh/ With She-Lion’s inspiration/ Santa says let’s play/ The Christmas tree formation…’

The original Three Lions was released in May 1996 to mark England’s hosting of that year’s UEFA European Championship.

The music was written by Lightning Seeds singer Ian Broudie, who once again teams up with Skinner and Baddiel.

The video also features World Cup legend Sir Geoff Hurst and Lionesses Jess Carter and Beth England.
