Who is Skin from Skunk Anansie?

Originally from Brixton, Skin rose to fame as the frontwoman of band Skunk Anansie, who went on to achieve 10 UK top 40s including hits ‘Brazen’, ‘Weak’ and ‘Charlie Big Potato’, before cementing themselves as British rock royalty through the coveted Glastonbury headliner spot in 1999. This iconic performance marked a pivotal moment in music history as Skin became the first black woman and Brit to headline the festival, paving the way for the likes of future talent such as Stormzy.

In 2019 the band celebrated their 25th anniversary with the release of the live album ‘25LIVE@25’ and a set of UK headline tour dates for the following year, that were later cancelled due to the pandemic. Instead, 2020 saw Skin participate in the hit ITV show, The Masked Singer, appearing as Duck and lasting six episodes before her identity was revealed.

In an interview following the unmasking, Skin revealed that growing up she felt like an ugly duckling amongst her brothers and so easily related to her character. Today, the now 56-year-old has spent decades celebrating her identity, remaining at the forefront of conversations surrounding race, gender and sexuality politics.

Recent years have continued to be transformative for the star. In 2021 Skin became a first-time mother with partner Rayne Baron, taking to Instagram to celebrate her joy and expressing that the birth of her child had marked “the greatest week in my entire life”. The celebrations continued in 2023 as Skin was awarded an OBE for services to music by King Charles, stating the achievement was "not bad for a skinny black girl from Brixton who fell in love with rock and roll".
