The Killers' 'Mr Brightside' reaches UK chart milestone
The hit song has spent 260 weeks in the UK Top 100 singles chart
The Killers' hit single 'Mr Brightside' has officially reached a UK chart milestone, after spending 260 non-consecutive weeks on the UK Top 100 singles chart - equivalent to a whopping five years.
The single was featured on the Las Vegas pop-rockers' chart-topping debut album 'Hot Fuss' which was released in 2004. The album also featured the singles 'Somebody Told Me', 'Smile Like You Mean It' and 'All These Things That I've Done.'
Despite not charting upon its first release in 2003, 'Mr Brightside' reached the top 10 during its second release in 2004. To date it has sold over 3.52 million in the UK alone and continues to be streamed 1.2 million times a week on average, according to the Official Chart Company.
The Killers' frontman Brandon Flowers explained in an interview in 2009 that the inspiration for 'Mr Brightside' came to him after the end of his first serious relationship.
He said, 'I was asleep and I knew something was wrong, I have these instincts. I went to the Crown and Anchor and my girlfriend was there with another guy.'
The title of second-longest running chart hit belongs to Snow Patrol, whose 2006 hit 'Chasing Cars' has spent 166 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart Top 100, closely followed by Ed Sheeran's 2017 single 'Perfect' with 165 weeks.
