The Darkness concert evacuated after stage equipment catches fire - video
During set opener 'Growing On Me'
Last updated 31st Jan 2023
The Darkness’ concert at Liverpool M&S Bank Arena on Sunday night (29th January) had to be evacuated due to on stage equipment catching fire.
As usual, Justin Hawkins, Rufus Taylor, Frankie Poullain and Dan Hawkins arrived on stage to a shower of pyrotechnic sparks as they launched into set opener ‘Growing On Me’ in front of the buoyant Liverpool crowd.
However, as the videos below show, equipment on the lighting rig had caught fire forcing the band to abort the first song early.
A message was relayed to the crowd through the tannoy system, "There is an emergency in the building, please leave by the nearest exit", and the band’s microphones were turned off.
The band downed their instruments and Justin Hawkins once again repeated the plea for fans to exit the stadium, reports the Liverpool Echo.
After a short delay of 20 minutes, The Darkness and the audience returned, with Justin saying: “Hey you guys. I need to explain something to you. You just blew the f---ing roof off! Sincere apologies for the disruption. Now the normal service will resume.”
The Darkness went on to perform a slightly abbreviated nine-song set with ‘Heart Explodes’, 'Solid Gold’ and ‘Friday Night’ omitted from the setlist.
Taking to Twitter afterwards, The Darkness wrote: “Liverpool! We did it, we blew the fookin’ roof off the arena tonight and quite literally set the place on fire! You witnessed the true power of rock & roll. We LOVED it. Thanks for an amazing night, and rockin’ out with us.”
The Darkness continued their co-headline tour with Black Stone Cherry at The OVO Hydro in Glasgow last night and the trek visits Birmingham Resorts World Arena this evening.
The remaining tour dates are as follows:
JANUARY 2023
Birmingham Resorts World Arena – Tue 31st
FEBRUARY 2023
Manchester AO Arena – Thu 2nd
Leeds First Direct Arena – Fri 3rd
