Texas singer Sharleen Spiteri is presenting Absolute Radio’s first-ever digital-first documentary series called Tales from the Cloakroom, which celebrates UK independent music venues.
Tales from the Cloakroom goes behind the curtain at the UK’s best-loved music venues and brings listeners intimate stories and unique moments from the perspectives of people who have worked and played at them.
Guest musicians contributing to the series include Kaiser Chiefs’ Ricky Wilson, Elbow’s Guy Garvey, KT Tunstall, Blossoms, Manic Street Preachers’ James Dean Bradfield and Travis’ Fran Healy.
Each episode looks at a new location, exploring how the venue began, the pivotal moments in its history and the legacy that it now holds.
The six venues in the series that represent an important part of the UK’s live music industry are London’s The 100 Club, Glasgow King Tut's Wah Wah Hut, Manchester Night & Day Café, Sheffield Leadmill, Leeds Brudenell Social Club and Cardiff Clwb Ifor Bach.
How to listen to Tales From The Cloakroom hosted by Sharleen Spiteri:
All six parts of the documentary series will be available to listen to in the FREE Absolute Radio mobile app from Friday 11th June 2021. You can also listen to all six episodes below.
You can also listen to Tales From The Cloakroom on Absolute Radio with the first episode being broadcast at 8pm on Sunday 13th June. Each episode will then follow weekly.
Presenter Sharleen Spiteri comments: “The UK's independent music venues are the lifeblood of an industry that I've proudly been a part of for over 30 years.
“To host this special series for Absolute Radio and to bring to life the history and heritage of each location will be a real honour. Grassroots venues have helped shape the music scene that we know and love today, and I can't wait to celebrate them with you.”
Absolute Radio content director Paul Sylvester adds: “We have to realise that audiences want to binge content they love and don’t always want to wait a week to hear the next episode of a series that they’re enjoying.
“We’ve seen this in television and now we’re applying the same model to Absolute Radio’s latest documentary series which we think will be a compelling listen for people.”
