Self-Released on The Sunday Night Music Club:

The music industry has changed enormously over the past few decades; from the arrival of streaming and playlisting to affordable and user-friendly tech to record and build bedroom studios. In addition, there are now multiple routes to releasing your music as an artist with the option to sidestep the usual record label route that used to be the norm.

Neither are guaranteed routes to success as art is not that straightforward but we wanted to keep focused on opportunities for artists, especially those starting out. We've recently launched Absolute Radio Kevin which focused entirely on debut singles or songs from debut albums, underlining the importance of bands first steps into the public domain.

On my Sunday show I carefully pick records each week to play - from garage rock, to neo classical, to post punk and art rock, alternative singer songwriters and genre crushing collectives.

What I am doing with the show now is opening up one space in my playlist per week for a self released artist - one who doesn't have the benefit of a label infrastructure. Especially after Brexit, streaming and recent stories of vastly increased costs for musicians to play in America, I wanted to do something that could be beneficial to the talent we have in this country.

How to submit songs for consideration:

If you're self-released and would like to maybe have it broadcast on my show, please do email selfreleased@absoluteradio.co.uk - I'll pick one track and support it on the show for a month at a time.

Here’s a couple of bits of information:

- Please send a web-link to audio and don’t attach any files, it’ll break our inbox and will likely get stuck in the system. Dropbox/Soundcloud links are fine.

- Make sure the audio is the best quality it can be.

- Please make sure there are no swears

- Let us have some information about you and your project. Please keep it brief though, we can’t read War and Peace.

- We won’t be able to reply to everyone or give feedback. But, we will get in touch with our chosen artist for the month.

I'd also like to add in here that alongside in-house label pluggers there are also independent plugging companies who specifically target radio and tv stations, and certain shows and presenters to introduce them to your music. I have worked alongside many amazing pluggers for a long time now and consider many to be friends, and I do think they do an incredible job. I'm not trying to take anything away from them and I would wholeheartedly recommend looking into one if your finances allow. I'm merely just extending the opportunistic arm of curation to a wider audience so that, together, with radio pluggers, established major and indie labels we are ensuring that we're not letting any unseen talent not shine due to lack of opportunity, especially in a cost of living crisis!

I look forward to listening to you and I hope you’ll listen to me too. The Sunday Night Music Club is on Absolute Radio, Sunday nights from 8pm.
