Watch BBC Breakfast weatherman make awkward Rick Astley gaffe
Absolutely brilliant
BBC Breakfast weatherman Matt Taylor was left red-faced this morning when he made a hilarious and awkward Rick Astley gaffe live in front of millions of viewers... and Rick Astley himself.
Unbeknownst to Matt Taylor, eighties chart sensation Rick Astley was invited to appear on BBC Breakfast to promote a new version of his single ‘Every One of Us’ that he’s releasing to promote the Sports Personality of the Year Unsung Hero awards and raise money for Children in Need.
After Taylor wrapped up his weather roundup, presenter Charlie Stayt asked the burning question: “‘Matt, are you a Rick Astley fan?”
Completely unaware that Astley was lined-up to be interviewed next, Taylor replied: “Erm, not a massive one.”
Stayt then chipped in: “Well, that was the wrong thing to say…. He’s listening and he’s coming up in just a moment. I’ll ask you again, are you a Rick Astley fan?!”
With a look of shock on his face, Taylor then backtracked, saying: “Love Rick Astley. The best. Grew up with him.”
Clearly revelling in Taylor’s misfortune, Stayt continued: “Great! He’s coming up next so he’ll be grateful to hear that… He heard everything you said, Matt. The damage is done.”
A man who doesn’t take himself too seriously, Rick Astley was in absolute stitches and hailed the blunder as “brilliant!”

Unsurprisingly, the video swiftly went viral when BBC Breakfast uploaded it to Twitter and it has now been watched more than 250,000 times. Astley even responded to the clip, saying: “All is forgiven!”
Since the incident, Matt Taylor has taken to social media to write: “Note to self. Charlie isn’t always trying to make me do something silly, like sing, on air (hence my response).
“AND MORE IMPORTANTLY… Make sure you check who is on the programme after you.”
He also changed his profile photo to his bewildered expression post-gaffe and wrote: “'Not a massive fan' of my #NewProfilePic. Sums up my morning though.”
