Liam Gallagher has scored his third consecutive number one album on the UK Official Album Chart with his latest release ‘MTV Unplugged’
The Oasis legend’s live album stormed straight in at the top spot with sales of 21,000 units – an impressive 10,000 of which were on vinyl, making it the best-selling vinyl record of 2020 so far.
Sharing a photo of himself proudly clutching his Official Number 1 Album Awards for ‘As You Were’ (2017), ‘Why Me, Why Not?’ (2019) and ‘MTV Unplugged’ (2020), Liam said: “Nobody told me there’d be days like these, strange days indeed. Most peculiar mama.
“3 number 1 albums in 3 years… not bad for an unsophisticated parka monkey. Thanks to everyone who made it happen LG x”
Elsewhere on the album chart, Thin Lizzy career-spanning retrospective ‘The Essential’ debuts at Number 16, and a reissue of Manic Street Preachers’ 1993 album ‘Gold Against The Soul’ re-enters at 17.
Liam Gallagher performs 'Sad Song':
Recorded at Hull’s City Hall in August 2019, ‘MTV Unplugged’ sees Liam join a list of all-time greats including Paul McCartney, Page and Plant, Eric Clapton and Nirvana, who have filmed a prestigious MTV Unplugged session.
Liam says of the performance: “I was honoured to perform at the legendary showcase that is ‘MTV Unplugged’. It was a lovely experience and the people of Hull were biblical and sounded fantastic."
The album melds solo songs such as Liam’s personal favourite ‘Once’ and the joyous ‘Now That I’ve Found You’, with a series of Oasis classics performed alongside Bonehead. These include ‘Some Might Say’, ‘Stand By Me’, ‘Cast No Shadow’, Liam’s first ever live vocal performance of the ‘Definitely Maybe’ bonus track ‘Sad Song’, and set closer ‘Champagne Supernova’.
For the stripped back performance, Liam was flanked by a trio of backing singers and string arrangements performed by the 24-piece Urban Soul Orchestra.
