Kurt Cobain's guitar from Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' video up for auction
It's expected to fetch a huge amount
The blue guitar Kurt Cobain played in Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ video 31 years ago is going under the hammer next month.
Cobain’s left-handed 1969 Fender Mustang electric guitar is one of the star items in Julien's Auctions' upcoming Music Icons auction, which runs from 20th to 22nd May 2022 at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York.
Previously on display at Seattle's Museum of Pop Culture, the guitar, which comes in a Competition Lake Placid blue finish with a matching headstock, has never been auctioned before.
Julien’s auctions is estimating that guitar will fetch $600,000 to $800,000 (£460,000 to £613,000) when it goes on sale. However, they state this is a “conservative” estimate and it may make much more.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale will go to the Kicking the Stigma initiative founded by the family of Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay that raises awareness about mental health disorders.
Martin Nolan, executive director of Julien’s Auctions, said: “This is one of the most iconic guitars ever to come to the auction block, this is the blue Mustang Fender guitar, one of Kurt Cobain’s favourite guitars of all time.
“The guitar comes with its original case and, also, the guitar strap, so that’s ... really important to collectors when they come to the auction to know the originality.”
Kurt Cobain’s iconic MTV Unplugged guitar sold for a massive $6,010,000 (around £4.83 million) at auction in the summer of 2020 and became the World’s Most Expensive Guitar in the process.
Alongside being the most expensive guitar, it set four further world records - World’s Most Expensive Acoustic Guitar, World’s Most Expensive Martin Guitar, World’s Most Expensive Piece of Memorabilia and World’s Most Expensive Nirvana Memorabilia.
David Gilmour’s fabled guitar, The Black Strat, previously set the world record for the World’s Most Expensive Guitar in June 2019 when it fetched $3,975,000 (£3,134,000) at Christie’s in New York as part of the David Gilmour Guitar Collection auction.
