Appearing on Absolute Radio presenter Danielle Perry’s new podcast, Elevenses with Danielle Perry, comedy powerhouse Steve Coogan has revealed his plans to take his iconic character Alan Partridge back out on the road once again.
With new episodes launching every Tuesday via Apple podcasts, Spotify, all mainstream podcast providers and right here on the Absolute Radio website, Elevenses with Danielle Perry sees Danielle take a morning break and sit down for a chat with famous faces from all walks of life to share tea, biscuits, and ask the same eleven questions.
Following the inaugural episode with Karl Pilkington last Tuesday (4th August), the Steve Coogan podcast episode is available to listen to right now and sees the comedian open up about how he misses performing live on stage.
“It’s been a while since I’ve done a live show,” Steve explained. “It’s ten years (Steve Coogan Live: As Alan Partridge and Other Less Successful Characters). I miss it. I sort of do it every ten years. So, I think in the next couple of years I’ll take a big live Alan Partridge show on the road.”
Elsewhere in the chat, Steve extolled the virtues of laughter: “There’s something about making people laugh which is a gift. I was probably more dismissive of it when I was younger but as I’ve gotten older, I realised that when we have problems or are dealing with things as a group or as individuals, often the only comfort left is laughter.
“So, I sort of treat it with more respect now ... it’s an old cliché about laughter being the best medicine but I think it is profoundly true. Even though I’ve done the more serious stuff occasionally, and even in the serious stuff I’ve done this; using humour to sugar the pill of different topics. And comedy is how you sugar the pill of life.”
Steve also revealed the somewhat unusual piece of memorabilia he keeps in his loo: “In my downstairs toilet I have a letter of complaint to the BBC made in 1992 about ‘why have you let this appalling man on Radio 4, it’s a disgrace’."
Listen to Danielle’s full chat with Steve below where he also reveals what he’s learnt from his distinguished 32-year career in comedy, his first memory, what he’s scared of, who his best friend is, and why he always had to go the long way round on his paper round…
