After The Rolling Stones topped the chart with ‘Goats Head Soup’ last week, Doves are flying towards number one with their sublime fifth studio album ‘The Universal Want’.
The trio, who formed from the ashes of dance act Sub Sub in 1998, are currently outselling the rest of the Top 5 combined in physical and download sales as they close in on the chart summit.
When it eventually hits number one on Friday, ‘The Universal Want’ will be Doves’ third chart-topper following ‘The Last Broadcast’ (2002) and ‘Some Cities’ (2005).
Doves’ last studio album 11 years ago, ‘The Kingdom of Rust’, reached number two while their seminal debut ‘Lost Souls’ peaked at no.16 but went on to achieve Platinum status.
In a great week for new albums, at the midweek stage Doves' fellow Mancunians Everything Everything are at number two with ‘Re-Animator’, shock-rock extraordinaire Marilyn Manson is at three with ‘We Are Chaos’ and The Flaming Lips are at five with ‘American Head’.
Last week on the eve of the release of ‘The Universal Want’, Doves frontman Jimi Goodwin and drummer Andy Williams joined Danielle Perry on her show for a catch-up about the new record and much more.
As well as having a chat, Doves performed in session exclusively for Absolute Radio, playing their 2009 anthem ‘Kingdom of Rust’ and current single ‘Prisoners’.

After a long decade away, Jimi Goodwin, Andy Williams and Jez Williams returned from their hiatus last year for a number of concerts including a Teenage Cancer Trust series show at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
Their first official show back was a warm-up gig for the Teenage Cancer Trust show at Warrington Parr Hall in March 2019.
