Doves have released their first new song in 11 years, the sublime anthem ‘Carousels’.

As you’d expect from the Wilmslow trio, ‘Carousels’ is a rich sonic soundscape that’s full of lush textures, subtle grooves, brooding vocals and a drum beat sample from Fela Kuti legend Tony Allen.

Commenting on the nostalgic lyrics, Doves say ‘Carousels’ is a “reminiscence of times we'd go to places like North Wales on holiday as kids. Places where you had your first experience of sound systems and music being played really loud.”

Speaking to NME about the track, frontman Jimi Goodwin said: “‘Carousels’ is a really exciting track to come back with, especially now as it’s shot through with a lot of hope,” Goodwin told NME. “It calls back to going to the fair when you’re a kid, dodging all the psychos and getting your waltzer money taken off you.

“We’re still really excited about trying stuff that we’ve never done and going to places that we as a band have never been to, and ‘Carousel’ certainly does that. We’ve never just been a band to plug in and play guitar – we draw on all of these different influences and make up our own.

“It’s a good harbinger of the album and just a great mission statement. Without having any agenda or a backstory as to what the record is, it just shows off our love of sonic weirdness, atmosphere and energy. We unanimously knew that this would be great as the first thing that people hear of us coming out of the gate after all this time. It’s a mission statement.”

After a long decade away, Jimi Goodwin, Andy Williams and Jez Williams returned from their hiatus last year for a number of concerts including a Teenage Cancer Trust series show at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

In January of this year, Doves broke the good news that the follow-up to April 2009’s ‘Kingdom of Rust’ is on the way.

Alongside a black-and-white photo of recording studio sound desk, Doves wrote: “News update!! Putting the finishing touches to the last song for album no 5. Mastering is in March.

“Sorry we can’t say when it will be released yet! As for now we will be working on videos and the cover art etc. We’re all very proud & well amped for album No 5.”

Doves ‘Carousels’ lyrics:

Just the wrong side of town

You just don't let go, keep it going Keep it going

Seeing the reason the bitter the pill you're sold

Tell me why are we living this life where fear takes hold

*

I’m gonna take you down

Back to the old fairground

Open muddy fields spin round

Oh ! hey now is this a Sign?

I’m falling down deep with the

Carousels in your eyes

*

And the wheel turns round

Just when you think your safe and sound

Change of the season,i found a reason to stay

But I’ve fallen so deep and our circle of trust remains

*

Now I’m gonna take you down. Hey !

Back to the old fairground

Open muddy fields go round

Hey now is this my Time?

I’m falling in deep with the Carousels in your eyes.

Carousels in your eyes.
