Fountains of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger has sadly passed away after contracting Coronavirus (COVID-19). The band's former bass player and songwriter, who was just 52-years-old, is confirmed to have passed away due to complications from the virus.

His lawyer Josh Grier confirmed the news to CNN with a statement which read, 'As many of you are aware, Adam had been hospitalised with Covid-19 and although he had been making some small improvements over the last few days, Adam’s condition was critical and he was ultimately unable to recover from Covid-19 complications.

'He was truly a prolific talent and even more so, a loving and devoted father, son and friend. We are terribly sorry to convey this loss.'

Former Fountains of Wayne lead singer Chris Collingwood shared a statement on Twitter from Adam's family before his death, announcing that he had been diagnosed with the virus.

Adam was a founding member of the band, which formed in 1995 and was possibly best known for their 2003 hit 'Stacy's Mom'. Adam played bass, keyboard and provided backing vocals alongside his fellow members Chris Collingwood, Jody Porter and Brian Young.

Not only was he an incredibly talented member of the band - he was also a prolific songwriter, and won a plethora of Emmy Awards for his abilities, as well as receiving Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for writing the title track for 1997 film That Thing You Do!, starring and directed by Tom Hanks.

The actor paid tribute to his one-time collaborator on Twitter after the news of Adam's passing.
