20 of the best country love songs of all time 💕
From first love to the first dance at a wedding 🎶
Last updated 5th Aug 2021
When it comes to writing songs about love, country music usually means their love of beer and trucks... Or murdering your cheating ex-husband. And boy, do they do it better than any other genre. But writing a traditional love song? Now that’s a challenge.
After searching high and low, we’ve rounded up our top favourite 20 country love songs. From the classics you know and love, to newer songs with a modern twist. The first wedding dance songs and the dancing around your kitchen songs, we’ve got the best of the best to make you feel warm and gooey inside.
1) Taylor Swift - 'Love Story'
This song does what it says on the tin - it's a love story. The sweet but cinematic song reimagines Romeo + Juliet, accompanied by a punchy chorus. For the millennials out there who were having their first crushes when Taylor Swift first blew onto the scene in the late 2000s, chances are this track takes you back and makes you wonder where Romeo is now.

2) Garth Brooks - 'If Tomorrow Never Comes'
When you think of Garth Brooks, you think 'Friends In Low Places', 'The Dance' and 'If Tomorrow Never Comes'. The latter is a hauntingly beautiful song of a man questioning if his wife died tomorrow, would she know just how much he loved her? Grab the tissues, this one pulls on your heartstrings.

3) Shania Twain - 'You're Still The One'
This song is for the seasoned lovebirds out there. Maybe you've been together 10, 20 or 30 years - but the magic hasn't died. You wake up everyday and choose your person... They're still the one. A smash hit for Shania, this song is still one of the best country love songs around.

4) Chris Stapleton - 'Tennessee Whiskey'
The only thing smoother than Tennessee whiskey is crooning Chris Stapleton. It's not the most obvious choice when it comes to love songs, but there's just something about this track that's sexy in a romantic way.
A new take on the David Allan Coe and George Jones versions, this song helped catapult Stapleton to fame back in 2015 after a decade of successful songwriting (he'll pop up again on this list later).

5) Maren Morris - 'The Bones'
If you're a fan of Maren Morris, you'll know she and her husband, fellow singer-songwriter Ryan Hurd, have a habit of writing hit songs about each other. 'The Bones' became a huge crossover smash in 2020 for Morris, using her creative wit to comparing the foundation of a relationship to the bones of a house. It's clever, it's catchy and the video is cute as can be.

6) Alan Jackson - 'Remember When'
Not only is this one of the greatest country songs - period - 'Remember When' is also a tearjerking homage to "for better and for worse". Penned by Jackson, his own story influenced the song. He married his high school sweetheart in 1979, but separated in the late 1990s due to the strain of his career. But they later reconciled - and we got 'Remember When'.

7) LeAnn Rimes - 'How Do I Live'
LeAnn Rimes was just 15 when she released 'How Do I Live', and was nominated for a Grammy for her performance. An intense power ballad that was a crossover hit, the song can be interpreted as longing for a past lover, or declaring that you can't be without the one you love.

8) Brett Young - 'In Case You Didn't Know'
This song blew up for Brett Young in 2017, and was used by almost every country fan as their first wedding dance song. But the story behind the song has nothing to do with romantic love.
When co-writer Trent Tomlinson was a little kid, every time he would leave the house, his mum would stop him on the way out the door and say: "Hey Trent, in case you didn’t know, love you". Aww.

9) Kacey Musgraves - 'Butterflies'
It's a little bittersweet to think that Kacey Musgraves and Ruston Kelly - the man who inspired this song - are no longer together, but regardless of its origins, 'Butterflies' remains a sweet and dreamy love song that takes something corny, like getting butterflies, and turning into a Grammy Award-winning hit.

10) Josh Turner - 'Your Man'
If this song doesn't make you want to pull your loved one onto the dance floor and two step until the sun comes up, we don't know what will. This twangy, up-tempo love song was penned by none other than Chris Stapleton, is perfect for turning the lights down low and getting close with your partner.

11) Alison Krauss - 'When You Say Nothing At All'
Even die-hard fans of the original Keith Whitley song can't deny that Alison Krauss' angelic voice took 'When You Say Nothing At All' to a whole new level. The most awarded country artist at the Grammy's of all time earned a spot on the list with this beautiful rendition, which came four years ahead of Ronan Keating's well-known version for Notting Hill.

12) Thomas Rhett - 'Die A Happy Man'
No country love song list is complete without this supersonic song. Not only did it put Thomas Rhett on the map, but is hands down the most-requested first dance wedding song of the last decade. His real life love story with wife, Lauren Akins - seen in this tropical music video - threads all of his songs together.

13) The Chicks - 'Cowboy Take Me Away'
When they're not feeding Earl poisoned black eyed peas, The Chicks make some of the most heartbreaking music in the country world. But 'Cowboy Take Me Away' is for the restless lovers out there, who want to get in the car and take the road less taken with their loved one riding shotgun.

14) Lonestar - 'Amazed'
Even people who don't know - or like - country music know this song. Texan quartet Lonestar released this colossal hit in the late 1990s and it remains relevant today. With the opening line 'Every time our eyes meet, this feeling inside me is almost more than I can take,' it's no wonder this song has stood the test of time.

15) Trisha Yearwood - 'She's In Love With The Boy'
A love song to make you smile, is how to best describe Trisha Yearwood's 'She's In Love With The Boy'. The 90s were arguably the best decade for country music, producing hit after hit - and a fair few of those belonged to Ms Yearwood. The sweet story about a young girl going off with less-than-ideal young boy will resonate with anyone reminiscing on their first love.

16) Luke Combs - 'Beautiful Crazy'
While some of his best hits were penned to fill huge stadiums and test his raspy roar, 'Beautiful Crazy' shows Luke Combs softer side. Written about his wife, Nicole, the song runs off all of her idiosyncrasies, and how it makes him love her even more.

17) Faith Hill - 'Breathe'
There's about five songs that could be included on this list featuring Faith Hill, but 'Breathe' ultimately deserves the spot more than any other. Silky smooth and sexy as hell, this is one of her most well known hits, and without a doubt, a brilliant love song.

18) Rascal Flatts - 'Bless The Broken Road'
Being single can be wonderful, but it can also feel like trudging around in the dark. We've all experienced wrong turns and bad decisions, but ultimately, they get us to where you're supposed to be. This track by Rascal Flatts is a love song for the 'everything happens for a reason' kind of people. Not to mention lead singer Gary Le Vox's mind-blowing vocals.

19) Dolly Parton - 'I Will Always Love You'
It broke her heart when Dolly Parton turned Elvis down, who wanted this song but also wanted all the rights to it. But Dolly sure made the right decision when a few decades later, she got the call that Whitney Houston wanted to record it for her new movie. And the rest was history. Did you know she wrote this song the same day she penned 'Jolene'?

20) Dan + Shay - 'Speechless'
After 'Tequila' shot up the charts in 2018, it was a tough act to follow. Then Dan + Shay released 'Speechless', and it was everywhere - winning EVERY award. The duo not only performed this song at Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas' wedding, but also Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin's nuptials. High praise, indeed.
