Love Island: Jake's dad DEFENDS his son over 'showmance' claims
Some viewers have branded him a 'fake'
It's certainly been a rough week in the Love Island villa for 24-year-old water engineer Jake Cornish. Although things between himself and Liberty Poole seemed to be going swimmingly, with the pair making their romance official, things have taken a sour turn since Jake arrived back from Casa Amor.
Although Jake remained loyal to his girl in the second villa, Liberty was later shown footage of her man egging on the other boys to crack on with the new girls, leaving many wondering if he was playing an almighty game.
Things then went from bad to worse for Jake when viewers branded him a 'fake', with many thinking he's playing up to the cameras, especially when his fellow Islanders also started to feel the same way.
Despite finally admitting to Liberty that he loves her on Sunday night, the pair still found themselves in the bottom four, with their cast mates voting them the 'least compatible' couple following their shaky week.
However, as we all wait for the iconic 'meet the parents' task, which is expected this week, Jake's dad Mark has now publicly defended his son, admitting he 'speaks before he thinks'.
Speaking to Bristol Live, Mark said: "What you see on telly is Jake. There is no motive. He is genuine but he speaks before he thinks, so when you see him on the telly saying things, it's because it's coming from his heart and he's just a nice lad."
Admitting Jake has always wanted to appear on the show, Mark confirmed this was never possible due to the timings of past relationship, with him adding: "I think that's why in his mind, he didn't say he loved Liberty from the beginning - because of the timing. He obviously loves her because he wouldn't have waited so long to tell her otherwise."
Following Jake's 'I love you' admission earlier this week, which left many viewers thinking he'd only said the words to get out of the doghouse, Mark said: "I don't know whether some of it is being staged or not because when Liberty came back onto the sofa, not one of the girls reassured her that he may have said what he said because he actually loves her. They may have been told to react like that."
"Hopefully we have turned a corner after the weekend and the public will start thinking that the others are in it to win it too."
"Jake and Liberty have been strong from Day One and I think the others felt it was a good idea to get rid of them, so they had a better chance at winning the show."
Check out all of the current couples in the Love Island villa:
