Who will play Harry, Ron and Hermione?

On 27th May 2025, the wait was over as HBO announced who would be taking on the iconic roles of Harry, Ron and Hermione. The actors are: Dominic McLaughlin in the role of Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

Speaking about the announcement, Francesca Gardiner (showrunner, executive producer) and Mark Mylod (director of multiple episodes, executive producer) said: "After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron.

"The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It's been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there."

Who will play Hagrid in the Harry Potter TV remake?

In March 2020, Deadline reported that Nick Frost - who is known for his roles in timeless classics such as Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz - was poised to take on the iconic role of the much-loved half-giant.

Following a cryptic post on Instagram in March from Nick himself, which saw him gush: "It’s happening, it’s actually happening", many eagle-eyed fans have noticed that the actor's 'following' count went up... But it was who he had followed that really got them talking...

Many spotted that Nick had also begun to follow the likes of John Lithgow and Paapa Essiedu - who have both also been confirmed to join the Harry Potter series cast.

In the original Harry Potter film series, Hagrid was played by the talented Robbie Coltrane, who sadly passed away in October 2022.

In July 2025, HBO shared the first look of Nick Frost in character, saying: 'Nick Frost has walked his first day in the big boots of Hagrid on the set of the new HBO Original Harry Potter series.'

Who else is in the cast?

In April, HBO announced who would be taking on six roles in the new series. Sharing photos of the actors, they wrote: 'Wands at the ready, we welcome our staff to Hogwarts. Please welcome John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch to the HBO Original Series Harry Potter.'

Emmy award-winning actor John Lithgow will step into the role of Professor Albus Dumbledore, with the actor famed for playing roles in 3rd Rock From The Sun, Dexter, The Crown and more - also appearing in many well-known films such as Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Interstellar and Shrek.

John Lithgow

As previously mentioned, Paapa Essiedu is lined up to play Snape, with the actor currently best known for his roles in the likes of Gangs of London, The Lazarus Project and Black Mirror.

The award-winning Janet McTeer - known for titles such as Damages, The White Queen, The Honourable Woman, Jessica Jones, Ozark and more - has been confirmed to take on the role of Professor Minerva McGonagall.

Luke Thallon is portraying Quirinus Quirrell - the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts who carries Voldemort as a parasite throughout the first instalment of Harry Potter, the Philosopher's Stone. He performed on stage in Presenter Laughter in 2019 alongside Andrew Scott.

Paul Whitehouse will be a familiar face to many, having long been appearing on TV in comedy shows as well as film roles. He will be taking on the role of caretaker Argus Filch, previously played by David Bradley.

John Lithgow on playing the new Dumbledore

Speaking to ScreenRant about the new role, John said: "Well, it came as a total surprise to me. I just got the phone call up at the Sundance Film Festival for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it's going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I'm afraid.

"But I'm very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That's why it's been such a hard decision. I'll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I've said yes."

Speaking to Variety in early 2025, he spoke of how HBO teased a 'new' take, and his interest in Dumbledore's character development. He said: "My big question to them was ‘What is new about this? Why do more with the canon when it’s already been done so well?’ They just made it all sound very new.

"As the kids grew older (in the books), you learn more and more about Dumbledore, and he became a much more surprising, complicated character. They have described this to me, and I’ve got to discover it for myself and make it my own."

Albus Dumbledore, the iconic headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, was originally played by Richard Harris in the first two Harry Potter films - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

However, after Richard's sad death in 2002, the role was taken on by Michael Gambon, who had the role in the films between 2004 to 2011, but himself passed away in 2023.

What about Voldemort?

Again, HBO are keeping their cards close to their chest on that one - however we do know one person it WON'T be - and you might want to prepare to be a little bit disappointment.

In what would have been an iconic, and dare we say perfect role for the actor, rumours were recently rife that Oscar-winning Peaky Blinders and Oppenheimer megastar Cillian Murphy was in the running to play the role of Lord Voldemort. Sadly, this has been debunked, and it's not just fans that have been left disappointed, with original Voldy star Ralph Fiennes also weighing in.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, the legendary Voldemort actor said: "Cillian is a fantastic actor. I actually think that's a wonderful, wonderful suggestion. I would be all in favour of Cillian."

When will the new series be released?

HBO Max is currently anticipating to launch the new series in 2027, with filming set to begin later this year. Find out what we know so far about the new Harry Potter TV series.
