Best-selling author Harlan Coben has made quite a name for himself in recent years, with some of his novels such as Missing You, The Stranger, Fool Me Once and Stay Close all being adapted into huge TV dramas. But for his latest offering, Harlan is doing things a little differently, writing a story specifically for television.

The new drama was first announced in February 2024, and now filming and production is complete, Lazarus has now landed on streaming platform Prime Video. Here's everything you need to know about the show.

What is it called?

The new drama is called Lazarus.

What is it about?

The official plot states: 'Harlan Coben’s Lazarus follows a man (Sam Claflin) who returns home after his father's (Bill Nighy) death and begins to have disturbing experiences that can't be explained. He quickly becomes entangled in a series of cold-case murders as he grapples with the mystery of his father's death and his sister's murder 25 years ago.

'Alexandra Roach plays Jenna Lazarus, who has buried herself in a world of spiritual practice but now when her brother (Sam Claflin) returns home and starts experiencing unexplained phenomena, she is forced to confront secrets from her own past.'

Speaking about the upcoming drama, Executive Producers Richard Fee and Nicola Shindler said: “Harlan and Danny have created another wonderfully compelling story but this time with an eerie twist Lazarushas all the ingredients of a propulsive mystery thriller with an extra dose of atmosphere and psychological horror that makes it particularly gripping.”

Lazarus

Where was it filmed?

Filming took place in various locations in the North West of England during 2024. A number of scenes were shot in Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter, as well as Sefton Park, whilst filming also took place in King Street, Faulkner Street, Chain Street, Ducie Street, and Chinatown in Manchester.

A small scene was also filmed at The Midland Hotel in Morecambe.

Is it based on a book?

No, unlike most of Harlan's other TV dramas, Lazarus was created solely for television and isn't based on a novel.

On his ideas for the TV show, Harlan said: "I thought about it for a little while as a novel, but even though it's not necessarily supernatural, it has a supernatural feel to it. And I saw it really visually and graphically and just thought, ‘Maybe this would be a really cool TV series.’

"So, at some point I talked to Nicola Shindler, my partner here, and Nicola's like, ‘Oh my god, this will make such a good series!’ And that’s how we started."

Who wrote it?

Just like he did for Netflix series Fool Me Once, which has broken viewing records, Harlan worked alongside BAFTA-winner Danny Brocklehurst to write Lazarus.

Speaking about his relationship with Harlan, Danny said: "We’ve become a bit like a band - like a well-oiled machine where each one knows each other's strengths, weaknesses and we know how to draw them out of each other. We both know when something's working, when something's not working and importantly, we speak freely to each other.

"I’ll tell Harlan an idea’s rubbish; he’ll tell me an idea’s rubbish… or gold. I think we’ve just reached that place where as soon as we get in a room, we know that we will create a story."
