A major incident has been declared in Bristol this evening as 400 people are evacuated from their homes in Redfield.

Bristol City Council say Barton House has 'major structural faults'.

Emergency services have been out on standby as a preauction.

In a letter to residents, it says 'a recent survey has shown there is a risk of building collapse if there was, for example, a fire, explosion or large impact'

It goes on to say 'for the mean time this is a temporary measure so we can carry out a more detailed survey to see if the results of the initial survey are the same for the rest of the building'

It adds ' We understand this may cause stress and anxiety, and want to reassure you that we will do all we can to ensure you are fully supported'

In a statement the council say he block has recently been subject to a number of surveys to assess options for the future of the building due to its age and method of construction.

Council officers are contacting all tenants within the block to advise that they stay with friends and relatives for a short period of time whilst further survey work and analysis is undertaken.

For those who cannot stay with friends and family, a temporary rest centre has been put in place for people to shelter whilst alternative arrangements are made.

The temporary rest centre will be based at the Tawfiq Masjid & Centre where beds, food and drink will be made available. Further rest centres are in the process of being established.

Barton House is a tower block in the Barton Hill area of Bristol. It is the oldest of the tower blocks in the Bristol City Council housing estate, construction being completed in 1958. The design and age of Barton House make it unique within the council’s housing estate.
