When is Shrek 5 out?
Following multiple delays, Universal Pictures has now set June 2027 as its release date.
Speaking to Collider in June 2024 Eddie Murphy, who voices the character of Donkey in the movies, confirmed filming started earlier in 2024, also adding there's going to be a separate Donkey movie for fans to look forward to.
He said: "We started doing Shrek 4 or 5 months ago.
"I recorded the first act and we'll be doing it this year, we'll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey's gonna have his own movie. We're gonna do Donkey as well. So we're gonna do a Shrek, and we're doing a Donkey movie."
When Eddie was asked if the two movies were being made at the same time, he added: "No, not at the same time. I started recording Shrek, I think it's coming out in 2025, and we're doing a Donkey one next."
Who is in the cast?
Mike Myers (Shrek), Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona), and Eddie Murphy (Donkey) will all return for the fifth movie.
In the cast announcement trailer released in February 2025, it was also revealed that Zendaya has joined the cast, playing the role of Shrek and Fiona's daughter Felicia.
On 27th November 2025, bosses then announced that Saturday Night Live‘s Marcello Hernández and Superman‘s Skyler Gisondo have joined the voice cast as Shrek and Fiona’s sons, Fergus and Farkle.
Illumination boss Chris Meledandri has previously spoken about the fifth movie.
Speaking to Variety at an event to celebrate the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Chris said of Shrek 5: "It’s not that dissimilar to the process that we went through with Mario, where you look at what the core elements are that audiences have loved, and you do your very best to honour those core elements.
"And then you’re hard at work to build story elements and new characters that take you to brand new places. The original cast is a huge part of that."
When did Shrek come out?
Believe it or not, the first instalment of Shrek was released way back in 2001, loosely based on the 1990 children's picture book of the same name by William Steig.
How many Shrek movies are out?
Following the movie's mammoth success, Shrek 2 was released in 2004, with Shrek The Third landing in 2007. A special Christmas version of Shrek called Shrek The Halls also came out in 2007, before the release of the last movie; Shrek Forever After, in 2010.
