11 things you'll only understand if you’re a Valentine's Day scrooge

Are you a Valentine's Day scrooge?

It's Valentine's Day on Wednesday 14th February, and whether you love it or hate it, you can't escape the red roses, boxes of chocolates and anonymous cards. Do you think the lurve-day is overrated and overpriced?

If you do, you can probably relate to these issues we have with the 14th February.

Things you'll know if you hate Valentine's Day:

1) If you're dating someone new it makes it really awkward

So you've been with your new partner a few weeks, how do you broach the subject of Valentine's gifts and how much do you spend?

Even years into a relationship the debate of whether or not to get something still gets brought up. So we'll just treat ourselves right?

2) The pressure to be romantic is too much!

We don't need to be told to love our other half, if the emotion is there it will come naturally. However, it is quite nice to make time for the significant other and perhaps Valentine's Day is more of a reminder to make time for your loved one in our busy lives.

3) People question why you are still single

The single people amongst us really feel the pressure in the run up to Valentine's Day, but don't let it get you down!

4) Forget buying flowers for the house

While freshly cut flowers brighten any home you might not want to buy them around Valentine's Day. A trip to the florist will reveal that it's just a sea of pink and red, and suddenly they're twice as expensive - did someone mention it was Valentine's Day? Oh yeah...

5) It reminds us we're alone

You're not alone, you're just single! Don't let being single on Valentine's Day get you down, there's plenty of things you can do with your single mates!

6) You can't get a decent birthday card anywhere

If you have a friend who has a birthday on or around the Valentine's Day, you'll know the pain in trying to find a card which isn't all lovey dovey. The selection at the card shop shrinks to about two birthday cards, while red and pink cards take up the rest of the shop.

7) There's so much PDA, seriously put each other down!

While holding hands and a peck on the cheek is perfectly normal, some Public Displays of Affection (PDA) are just way too much. So just remember that the people around you might not want to see what should be kept private.

8) We're done with social media-lovin'

Yes, we all know you love your other half, but the social media world doesn't need to know that. Endless scroll after scroll and your socials feeds will be full of it, so keep your Facebook PDA private, whisper it in their ear, don't post it on their wall.

9) Chocolates are great, but think about the weight

It was only six weeks ago you gave up chocolate in a New Year's resolution, so being surrounded by chocolate on this loved-up day is the 'perfect' way for you to break your resolution. Argh!

10) It's another occasion to buy presents for

We've only just started paying off the credit cards for all the Christmas presents we bought, but here's another occasion to buy for albeit only for one person.

11) The sympathy Valentine's card

That feeling when you open your post and you've got a Valentine's card can be a great feeling, great until that moment you realise it's a sympathy card from your mum or your best friend.

You know their handwriting!

Whether you love it or loathe it, Happy Valentine's Day! ❤️
