The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have released a brand new photo of their youngest son Prince Louis, as he celebrates his third birthday today (Friday 23rd April).

Taken by his mum Kate Middleton at the beginning of the week, the adorable new snap shows the youngster sat on his bicycle in the grounds of Kensington Palace, as he prepares to leave for his first day of nursery.

Captioning the new post on social media, Kate and Prince William wrote last night, 'Three tomorrow! 🚲

'Taken earlier this week by The Duchess before he left for his first day of nursery, The Duke and Duchess are pleased to share a new image of Prince Louis. 🎈'. (sic)

The photo shows a smiley Prince Louis wearing a jumper, shirt and shorts as he prepared to head off to Willcocks Nursery School in West London. Twitter users were quick to comment on the cute photo, one person wrote, 'Happy Birthday 🎈!!!! Fantastic photo', with another writing, 'WOWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️'. (sic)

Prince Louis is fifth in line to the throne having been born after his brother and sister, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, on St George's Day back in April 2018. Kate gave birth to her third child at the Lindo Wing in St Mary's Hospital, with Prince Louis weighing a healthy 8lb, 7oz.

Check out all of the photos from Prince Louis' christening below:

The first is a group shot showing the Duke and Duchess with their children and relatives from both sides of the family, featuring the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Charles, Carole and Michael Middleton, Kate's sister Pippa and her husband James Matthews, and brother James Middleton. While the Queen is not present (she and her husband Prince Philip did not attend the ceremony), her likeness does still feature in the photo: look just behind Michael Middleton's head and you'll spot an oil portrait of Her Majesty, painted by Michael Noakes in 1973.

Members of the Royal family (including the Duchess of Sussex, linking her arm through her husband's) appear in the second picture, with Prince George grinning as his sits on his father's knee and Princess Charlotte apparently distracted from the camera by her baby brother.

A third shows the Cambridge family in an image that recalls their Christmas portrait from last year; it's the family's first official picture as a five.

The final image released last night was shot in the gardens of St James's Palace.

This morning, the Duke and Duchess unveiled a final, more candid image of Kate and a smiling baby Louis, which was captured by Camera Press's Matt Porteous, who photographed Prince George for his third birthday. 'The Duke and Duchess hope that everyone enjoys this lovely photograph of Prince Louis as much as they do,' a Palace tweet said.

Prince Louis' birthday arrives in what has been a period of mourning for the Royal Family, following the sad passing of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, on Friday 9th April.

After Prince Phillip's funeral took place last weekend, The Queen released a heartfelt statement to mark her 95th birthday on Wednesday 21st April, thanking the public for their support.

Her Majesty's statement read, “I have, on the occasion of my 95th birthday today, received many messages of good wishes, which I very much appreciate.

“While as a family we are in a period of great sadness, it has been a comfort to us all to see and to hear the tributes paid to my husband, from those within the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the world.

“My family and I would like to thank you for all the support and kindness shown to us in recent days. We have been deeply touched, and continue to be reminded that Philip had such an extraordinary impact on countless people throughout his life.”
