Game Of Thrones animated series in early development at HBO Max

All about this!

Published 28th Jan 2021

HBO and its WarnerMedia bosses just can't stop planning new visits to Westeros. Not content with a prequel now shooting and a spin-off in development, there is now a__ Game Of Thrones animated show in very early development at HBO Max.

The Hollywood Reporter cautions that this is far from official, and executives are meeting with writers to discuss concepts and hear pitches. No deals are in place and there remains a chance that the show won't go forward – just ask the other Thrones prequel, which reached pilot stage and was scrapped after that.

All that is known so far is that it won't be some child-focused 'toon, sticking more to the adult style of the original series. And we'd be shocked – shocked, we tell you! – if this is the last attempt to keep the show alive in some form.

Check out all of the Game of Thrones filming locations you can visit (when we aren't in lockdown):

Lake Myvatn, Iceland

Lake Myvatn is the location used for filming Beyond the Wall. Nearby are the Myvatn Nature Baths and the dramatic Hverfjall Crater – perfect for an immersion into the wilderness that the Wildlings and White Walkers roam.

Diocletian's Palace, Croatia

A number of locations in the beautiful country of Croatia have been used in Game of Thrones including the ancient city of Split. The city's walled Diocletian's Palace was used as the site of the Mother of Dragons' throne room.

The Khaleesi took counsel from her advisors here.

Sibenik, Croatia

Also in Croatia the city of Sibenik, was used for the famous city of Braavos.

Here's how it looked in the series, with Arya Stark's tutor the Faceless Man Jaqen H'ghar hailing from the area.

Seville, Spain

Seville was used for scenes set in Dorne, the most exotic of the Seven Kingdoms, where the ornate private estate of the House Martell stands. The royal palace known as the Alcázar of Seville also featured in the series.

The family of Martell lived in this beautiful building in the show.

Northern Ireland

A number of locations in Northern Ireland feature in the TV series from Tollymore Forest Park in County Down where the White Walkers begin their march. The haunting avenue of serpentine beech trees near Armoy, County Antrim became the Kingsroad.

This became the Kingsroad in the show, where many characters travelled on various journeys.

Morocco

Found between Marrakech and the Sahara this city is entirely of clay. Ait Benhaddou was chosen as the filming location for the slave trading city of Yunkai. Another location found in Morocco is Essaouira, an ancient city which is the location for Astapor, the home of the Unsullied Army.

Yunkai

Ait Benhaddou is where the city of Yunkai was filmed, including the iconic moment that Daenerys was carried through the crowds as they all called her 'Mhysa' - mother.

Doune Castle

Doune Castle in the Stirling district of Scotland played host to many GOT characters over the years, seeing as it was the real-life filming location of Winterfell, the home of the Stark family.

Murlough Bay

Murlough Bay in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, was a filming location for the show as the Iron Islands, home to the Greyjoy family.

Mdina, Malta

This gate into the medieval city of Mdina in Malta was one of the gates into the fictional capital city of King's Landing in the show.

King's Landing

The gate popped up a few times throughout the series as a way into the capital city.

Game of Thrones fans were left devastated back in 2019 when the final ever series aired in April, before concluding in May 2019.
