Westlife singer Shane Filan has released a beautiful statement following the heartbreaking death of his mother, Mae Filan.

Revealing it was the 'saddest day of his life', Shane wrote, on Instagram, 'Yesterday, Sunday 15th of December was the saddest day of my life. My mother Mae who was an incredible beautiful woman, wife, mother, grandmother & friend passed away peacefully surrounded by all her family…

'I’d like to say thank you to everyone for all your well wishes at this time. To all the fans for all your support & lovely messages Thank you… ‘Her funeral is a very private time for me & my family to grieve & I know you all understand & will respect that.’

He then added, ‘If you would like to do something in her memory you can make a small donation to Sligo North West Hospice who looked after so beautifully & peacefully in her final days and will continue to do so for so many more families. ‘Thank you. Love always, Shane & family.’

Following the devastating news, fans and friends of the singer were quick to comment, sending their love and condolences to the Filan family.

One fan wrote, 'Condolences Shane. Praying for you and your family❤', with another adding, 'Thinking of you all💔❤️ what a lovely woman she was, and so very proud of you x'. sic

A third added,'Sorry for your loss prayers and thoughts are with you and your family❤️'.

Another then wrote, 'My sincere condolences, Shane. I never knew your mother and I only “know” Shane Filan, the singer. But over the years I could tell, if only from looking at the photos you shared, that you and your mother had an incredible bond. Please take all the time in the world to grieve, heal and be with your loved ones, taking time to remember your mother. Love, Selly x 💚'. sic

Of course, if you are a fan of Irish band Westlife, you'll probably know that it was Shane's mum Mae who called up Louis Walsh and asked him to take notice of Westlife!

Louis, who managed the band for a number of years, revealed the news in an interview, saying, "She rang me and said how good her son and the group were, and for some reason I believed her.

"Every mother says their son is brilliant. I believed Mae Filan."

Our thoughts are with Shane and his family at this difficult time. ❤️
