Wham! tops UK Chart with classic Christmas track for second time

'Last Christmas' is in the Number 1 spot again

As we get closer to Christmas more and more people are switching on their favourite Christmas songs to get them in the festive spirit. Wham!'s Christmas anthem 'Last Christmas' is proving to be popular this year, even reaching Number 1 in the UK Singles Chart last week.

The 1984 track didn't top the charts when it was first released, as that spot was taken by Band Aid's 'Do They Know It's Christmas?', with 'Last Christmas' sitting at Number 2. However, this isn't the first time the Wham! song has gotten to Number 1, as the song reached the milestone in 2021 on New Year's Day.

This past week, the single knocked the Queen of Christmas Mariah Carey's song 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' off the top spot and unsurprisingly there are also several other Christmas songs currently in the Charts. Elton John and Ed Sheeran's Christmas song from last year 'Merry Christmas', Brenda Lee's 'Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree', 'It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas' by Michale Bublé, and 'Fairytale of New York' by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl are all currently in the Top 10.

Andrew Ridgeley shared his thoughts on 'Last Christmas' getting to the Number 1 spot, saying: "George’s family and everyone at George Michael Entertainment are over the moon that so many of you love and appreciate the enduring appeal of WHAM!’s Last Christmas to make it Number 1 again this year, and for that we are truly, truly grateful.

"This is a very emotional time of year for everyone who loved George and it is extremely important to us to know that he retains a special place in people’s hearts. It is because of that love and support that the charitable work that meant so much to him can be carried on for many years to come. Thank you to everyone.

"It is a wonderful surprise and a most fabulous, unexpected Christmas gift to have 'Last Christmas' attain the number one spot for the second year on the bounce. George would be so thoroughly pleased as it is the ultimate affirmation of his spectacular songwriting talent, it would mean so very much to him and it is confirmation of the cherished place WHAM! occupies in our public’s affections"
