Bob Marley's real name is Nesta Robert Marley, but growing up he opted to use his middle name when someone pointed out that Nesta sounded feminine. Robert Marley then became the well-known Bob Marley!
2. Bob Marley named his record label after his own nickname
Bob Marley had a hard time growing up in Kingston, Jamaica because of his bi-racial heritage, which led him to need to prove his strength and resilience in street fights. This earned him the nickname Tuff Gong, and he later used this name for several enterprises including his own record label.
3. Bob Marley has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
In 1994, Bob Marley was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with Elton John, John Lennon and Rod Stewart. Bob Marley was inducted by Bono, and his backing singers The I-Threes performed 'Redemption Song' as part of the ceremony.
4. Bob Marley has two of the UK's most streamed albums from the 70s, 80s, and 90s
Bob Marley and the Wailer's 'Legend' is the 5th most streamed album from the 70s, 80s and 90s in the UK. The album chart was compiled by the Official Charts Company in partnership with Greatest Hits Radio.
Bob Marley and the Wailer's album 'Exodus' from 1977 ranked 10th most streamed, making them and Oasis the only artists to have more than one album in the Top 10 ranking.
5. You can buy Bob Marley coffee
Called Marley Coffee, the business was started by Bob Marley's son Rohan Marley in 2009. The coffee beans are grown in Jamaica, and all their products are Fairtrade certified.
Inspired by Bob Marley's music, the blends use the names 'Buffalo Soldier', 'One Love', and 'Lively Up'.
6. There is a Bob Marley musical
Called Get Up, Stand Up! the musical follows the life and music of Bob Marley.
Greatest Hits Radio partnered with the musical, which first premiered in October 2021, in London's Lyric Theatre. The show is still running throughout 2022 and you can get tickets from here.
7. Bob Marley is one of the top earning dead celebrities
Even after his tragic death, Bob Marley's music is still being appreciated and played to this day. His music sales along with the profits from a number of brands he created throughout his lifetime, make him the 11th highest-earning dead celebrity according to Forbes Magazine.
In 2021, Roald Dhal takes the top spot, with other celebrities including Elvis Presely, Dr. Seuss, and Michael Jackson ahead of Bob Marley on the list.
8. Bob Marley received The United Nations Peace Medal of the Third World
In 1978 Bob Marley was awarded The United Nations Peace Medal of the Third World for his courageous work fighting for peace and justice in Jamaica during a time of great political unrest.
9. Bob Marley used to be a palm reader
Although Bob Marley decided pretty early on that he wanted to be a singer, he spent a short time reading palms and was apparently pretty good at it! However, he gave this up when he was seven and has refused to read anyone's palm since.
10. Bob Marley's album 'Legend' is the best-selling reggae album ever
The posthumous album 'Legend' was released in 1984, three years after Bob Marley's death, and went on to be the best-selling reggae album of all time, with more than 12 million copies sold worldwide.
11. Bob Marley received Jamaica's Order of Merit
The Order of Merit is a high honour awarded to Jamaican citizens who have achieved notable international success. The motto of the merit is 'He that does truth comes into the light'.
Bob Marley received this honour in 1981 for his outstanding contribution to Jamaican culture. Bandmate Bunny Wailer also received the Order of Merit in 2017.
12. Bob Marley has at least 13 children
Although the exact number of children the singer has is unknown, he has claimed to be the father of 13 children, including his four biological children with his wife Rita, biological children with other women, as well Rita's child from another relationship who he adopted.
13. Bob Marley has a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame
Bob Marley received the Hollywood star posthumously in 2001. The ceremony took place on what would've been his 56th birthday.
14. Bob Marley survived an assassination attempt
While rehearsing for a free concert in Jamaica, an anonymous gunman who perceived the concert as a political demonstration shot at the singer. Bob was shot in the arm, his wife Rita was shot in the head and his manager Don Taylor was shot in the chest, but thankfully they all survived.
The concert was scheduled for two days after the incident and Bob Marley still showed up and played the show. The incident is referred to in his song 'Jamming', with the line "No bullet can stop us now".
15. 'Redemption Song' got a new music video for it's 40th anniversary
To commemorate what would have been Bob Marley's 75th birthday in February 2020, his family, Universal Music, and Island Records worked together to celebrate the music legend.
This included commemorating the 40th anniversary of Bob Marley's soulful 'Redemption Song', which appeared on the last album released during his lifetime. A new animated music video was created and released on his birthday (6th February). It was created by French artists Octave Marsal & Theo De Gueltzl, and includes 2747 original drawings. The video uses 'powerful symbols to amplify the magnitude of the song's timeless lyrics and importance in today's world'.

Bob Marley was born in St. Ann Parish in Jamaica in 1945. He moved to Kingston, Jamaica, as a young boy with his mother following his father's death.
Was he married?
Bob Marley married Sunday school teacher Rita at the age of 21, and remained married to her for the rest of his life.
Rita went on to be a part of The I-Threes, who were Bob Marley's backing singers.
How did Bob Marley become famous?
Bob Marley started making music as part of a group called The Wailers, alongside his friends Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh. The group toured overseas and gained recognition, but split in 1973 to pursue separate careers. Bob then went on form a new band under the stage name Bob Marley and The Wailers.
Who were the Wailers?
Bunny Livingston (born Neville O’Riley Livingston) who later became known as Bunny Wailer, and Peter Tosh (born Winston Hubert McIntosh) formed The Wailers with Bob Marley in Jamaica in 1963. Originally called the Wailing Wailers, they later shortened the name to be the Wailers.
The group would listen to American radio stations and were inspired by rhythm and blues music.

In 1973, Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh left to pursue solo careers, and Bob Marley recruited a new band, as well as The I-Threes as backing singers, which included his wife Rita.

The members of the original Wailers group are sadly no longer with us. Bunny Wailer passed away in March 2021 from complications from a stroke he suffered in July 2020. He was 73-years-old when he died.

We spoke to Cleopatra Rey at Greatest Hits Radio Live, and she opened up about the production and what she wants people to take away from the show: "His message, it's so relatable. And I think also, you can hear his songs from another perspective, I'd say because it was very simplistic but so profound, you know? So as much as you enjoy the music and the groove, the power in what he's saying, like, 'everything's gonna be alright', and there's 'one love and one heart'. It's the truth, isn't it? Everybody can kind of relate to that. So I'd say to really reintroduce yourself to what is he saying."
Is there a Bob Marley film?
Yes, there is also a biopic about Bob Marley, titled Bob Marley: One Love. Kingsley Ben-Adir starred as the music legend in the story about his life, with the biopic released on 16th February 2024.
Bond actress Lashana Lynch also appeared in the biopic, playing the role of Rita Marley, as well as other names such as Happy Valley's James Norton, The Trial of Christine Keeler's Anthony Welsh and Silent Witness' Umi Myers.
How did Bob Marley die?
On 11th May 1981, Bob Marley sadly passed away from cancer at the age of 36. The singer died of Melanoma, which he was reportedly first diagnosed with in 1977, but left predominantly untreated, causing it to spread.
Where is Bob Marley buried?
After he died in Miami in 1981, his body was flown back to Jamaica to be buried.
