There's going to be a Jane The Virgin spin-off series!
We're not ready for it to be over yet
Last updated 3rd Apr 2019
As fans of Jane The Virgin will be sadly aware, the series is coming to an end after the fifth series, which is currently airing weekly in the UK on Netflix. After THAT bombshell about how her dead husband Michael Cordero Jr. had come back from the dead, viewers of the show have been trying to wrap their heads around how this will affect her future with Rafael.
We do have a whole season to get through before then - but after that ends later this year, what on earth will we do with ourselves? Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman has confirmed that the show will definitely end after this series, much to the devastation of its loyal fanbase.
However, there is some light at the end of the tunnel - network The CW, who hosts Jane, have announced plans for a spin-off. Here's everything we know about it so far.
Is Jane The Virgin getting a spin-off?
It sure is! Network The CW confirmed that a spin-off for the show was in the works in December 2018. In January 2019, it was confirmed that the show would be called Jane the Novela.
Jane actress Gina Rodriguez posted a photo to Instagram about the happy news, showing her wearing a pregnancy belly with the caption, 'We got good news from the CW! Jane will be birthing a SPIN OFF!!!!! Jane The Novelas!!!'
Some eager fans questioned whether this could actually mean that Jane has another baby in season five of Jane The Virgin, but The CW bosses have confirmed that the picture was purely for the purpose of the spin-off.
What is the Jane The Virgin spin-off about?
According to Deadline, it is 'envisioned as a soapy, telenovela-inspired anthology series in the tradition of Jane the Virgin, where each season is based on a different fictional novel "written by" Jane Villanueva and narrated by the author herself.'
This means that Gina Rodriguez is reprising her role as Jane, and will become the narrator for the show - taking over the role of narrator from voice actor Anthony Mendez. She described the spin-off at a press event in January 2019 as being "fantastic", adding, "The pilot is unbelievable. We hope we can give something just as great as we did with Jane the Virgin."
Jane The Virgin spin-off cast
Aside from Gina reprising her role as Jane, it is not yet known whether any of the other actors from Jane The Virgin will feature in the show. However, it was announced in January 2019 that Jacqueline Grace Lopez had been cast as the main character, Estela. She is best known for a small role in East Los High as Veronica, and also as Cecelia in 2015 film El Camino.
Estela is described as being "an art curator who has spent years playing it safe – until she finds out a shocking secret that changes everything and forces her to live a double life."
Jacqueline took to Instagram with a very sweet post in February, confirming that she was taking part in the project. She wrote, 'Beyond blessed. It takes hard work. But this. T H I S. Makes it all worth it. ❤️❤️❤️ I cannot wait to share this story with you. The script is AMAZING. 🔥The producing team feels like family. 💕I am the luckiest girl in the world. Let’s do this.' sic
Hunter Parrish will play the male lead - Felix, the wealthy son of Renata, with whom he co-owns a vineyard. Hunter had a small part in Zac Efron film 17 Again, as well as It's Complicated and Still Alice. He has also had roles in series Weeds, The Good Wife, The Following, Quantico and This Is Us.
Desperate Housewives star Marcia Cross has been cast as Felix's mum Renata. Aside from her iconic role as Bree Van De Kamp in the series for eight years, she's a prolific TV actress and has starred in plenty of TV shows. She is described as being "a manipulative and glamorous mother who will stop at nothing to establish her son's legacy, even if it means standing in the way of his happiness."
According to IMDb, other cast members are as follows: Al Carabello as Oscar, Federico Dordei as August Geroux, Remy Hii as Luen, Benito Martinez as Raul and Holland Roden as Sienna.
