Jane The Virgin season five finale marks the end of the show 💔
Don't go, Jane!
Last updated 5th Aug 2019
Jane The Virgin may sound like an odd premise initially, but it's become an absolute TV phenomenon since it first hit screens in 2014. Yes, it's incredibly far-fetched that a virgin Catholic girl would become pregnant after being accidentally artificially inseminated, but it's SO MUCH FUN.
People all over the world became obsessed with the telenovela-style series - they've followed Jane's journey as she accepted motherhood and seen her relationships flourish and then wilt, just like the flower that hangs over her head (physically and metaphorically).
In a devastating twist of fate, the show has come to an end after the fifth season which was released on Netflix and finished in July 2019. If you're only just joining the Jane fandom, be warned - there are a LOT of SPOILERS below, so if you don't want to find anything out, avert your eyes.
When does Jane The Virgin season 5 come out?
The latest and final season of Jane The Virgin began airing in the US on channel The CW on 27th March 2019, and became available to stream in the UK on Netflix on the 28th. The new episodes were released weekly one day after their release in the US, and the show came to an end in the UK on 1st August 2019.
Is Michael alive on Jane The Virgin?
...Sort of. Basically, it turns out that Sin Rostro AKA Rose administered an injection which caused him to have the kind-of heart attack that we saw in season three. She then stole him away whilst unconscious and cruelly gave him so much electroshock therapy that he has absolutely no memory of his life. It's actually really quite horrible.
Rose then imparted this information to Rafael, who immediately went to find Michael - who now goes by Jason a lá Jason Bourne because of, y'know, amnesia - and had him DNA tested to check it's definitely him and not just one of Rose's accomplices in a mask and a voice changer.
Rafael then selflessly brought Michael/Jason back into Jane's life, who revealed that the only thing he remembered was waking up in a field, and being told by Rose that he'd been a horrible person in his past life and that he needed to start over again. Utterly heartbreaking.
Jane then had the job of helping Michael/Jason get his memories back by spending time with him and trying to help his brain recover everything - all the while working on her relationship with Raf.
Whilst she was successful in helping Michael regain his memories, it had a negative impact on things with Raf, and they split. Sob!
When Jane and Michael/Jason realised that things would never be the same, they parted ways - and Michael/Jason found love with the scary ranger who lived over the road, Charlie, played by Brett Dier's real-life fiancée Haley-Lu Richardson.
Did Michael die on Jane The Virgin?
To recap what happened to Michael before... He tragically died in season three after being shot by Sin Rostro AKA Rose AKA Susanna Barnett, and although he miraculously survived in the days afterward, he quit the police force to become a lawyer, and on the day of taking his exam he collapsed on the floor of a heart attack as a result of the shooting.
Obviously, this was deeply distressing - not only to Jane and her family, but to fans who are on #TeamMichael, and even converts from #TeamRafael. Jane was now a widow in her mid-twenties, and began to date others, before inevitably finding herself drawn back to Rafael.
However, now that Michael is back, this throws up a whole load of questions about whether she'll stay with Rafael or whether she'll go back to Michael.
Actor Brett Dier has taken to Instagram to share a clip of that moment in the last season, with the cryptic caption, 'In two more days...... and within the first 35.7 seconds of the show... you’ll find out who or what this guy is.
'Be prepared to uncontrollably scream at the TV. Also.... this season has personally been my favorite to shoot!! So I’m super stoked to finally be able to share it with you all IN 2 DAYS 🛵 #janethevirgin.'
Why did Brett Dier leave Jane The Virgin?
Brett Dier AKA Michael Cordero Jr. - Jane's husband - left the show in season three when his character was killed off. At the time, fans became suspicious that Brett had decided to leave, due to the shocking and unanticipated nature of Michael's death. However, when he came back from the dead in the season four finale, it all made sense.
Jennie Snyder Urman told Entertainment Weekly, "It’s not a twin. I can’t say whether it’s definitely Michael, that will be answered in the first episode of the fifth season. There’s definitely going to be some questions because Rose has a dicey history, but it certainly looks like Michael. This person has been somewhere and has had a journey so we’ll be getting into that.
"I always left it open as a maybe in that I knew that he was going to be dead for the purposes of the show and for Jane, for the family, for what we wanted to explore in terms of grieving. There was always a little bit of a “who knows, it’s a telenovela” but if I say he’s not really dead dead dead, people would be like, “He could be alive.” So you’re in a tricky position when you talk about that.
"For a year and a half he was dead and now this character is back and as we move into the fifth season and the theme of things coming full circle starts to emerge, the return of this character felt right thematically in terms of where we wanted to go, in terms of a return to this central love triangle that was so important to the show for so long and now everybody is in really different places."
Who did Jane The Virgin end up with?
Ahh, the question on everyone's lips. Did Jane choose to stay with Rafael, the father of her child? Or did she go back to her husband, who rose from the dead? Of course, no-one knew ahead of season 5 and show bosses understandably played their cards very close to the chest.
When asked this very question, show boss Jennie Snyder Urman told the New York Times, "It’s always been fun and romantic to see who she ends up with, but it’s really about her achieving her dreams — that’s been the longest and the most singular trajectory in her journey.
"You could see a million different happy endings for Jane in terms of who she ends up with — if she ends up with anyone. For me, her achieving what she wants to achieve in her life and balancing that with being the parent that she wants to be is my biggest dream and hope for her."
But of course, the show's team knew that Jane The Virgin had to have a happy ending, and so Jane and Rafael got married in one of the most emotional and heartwarming TV weddings we've ever seen.
Is there a trailer for season 5 of Jane The Virgin?
Yes there is! Watch below:
What has happened in Jane The Virgin so far?
What a question. As is normal in the telenovela genre, the plot is incredibly outrageous and far-fetched, and the story arcs have changed drastically over the last five years that the show has been running. Here's an overview of everything that's happened in Jane The Virgin so far...
Is Jane The Virgin on Netflix?
Jane The Virgin's first four series appear on Netflix, but show bosses have not yet confirmed whether the upcoming and final season of the show will be available to stream on Netflix.
NOW WATCH: Jane The Virgin's cast tease details about the new season
Who narrates Jane The Virgin?
The voice actor who plays the narrator is Anthony Mendez, but the real question here is whether the character of the narrator is actually someone from the series that we either already know.
Thankfully, this question was answered in the final ever episode, and in the end, the most obvious theory was correct. It was Mateo! The Narrator has always been there to drop hints and provide context when Jane The Virgin got into really confusing, telenovela waters.
At the ceremony, Mateo, Ellie and Anna give a reading from a book, with Mateo receiving coaching from his 'glam-mother' and telling Jane and Rafael, "She said I’d be great at voice-over work," as the Narrator tells the audience, "And for the record, I am." Aww.
Theories amongst fans of the show included basically any of the male characters. The Narrator dropped hints throughout the series that he does, in fact, know Jane and her family, and one of the most popular theories about the identity of Jane The Virgin's narrator was that it could have been Mateo.
Although there was the slight issue that he had not yet been born for a lot of the story he is telling, it turned out that the show was a televised version of the novel of Jane's life, which she had written, so grown-up Mateo was the narrator for that.
Another theory was that he could have been Jane's grandfather Mateo, namesake of her son. This was due to the fact that at the wedding of Jane's parents, Xiomara and Rogelio, the Narrator said, "And Xiomara? Well, she looked perfect. At least to the people who loved her most — which includes me."
However, now that we know it's Mateo Junior, it still works!
A lot of fans were convinced that the Narrator was a figment of Jane's imagination, and was in fact the narrator of her upcoming book - a fictionalised novel about her grandmother, mother and herself.
Whilst Jane chose to make the novel more about her life in general, rather than the original idea, this theory isn't far wrong... But it was Mateo!
What happened in the season 5 finale of Jane The Virgin?
In a rare feat for TV these days, Jane viewers were actually overjoyed with how the series ended, and many loose ends were tied up in the series finale episode of Jane The Virgin.
Did Jane and Rafael finally get married?
Yes - the whole episode centred around Jane and Rafael FINALLY tying the knot. After break-ups and make-ups and husbands coming back from the dead - not to mention the artificial insemination that started this whole thing off - those two really had been through the mill.
But it wouldn't have been Jane The Virgin without a dramatic wedding day! Jane a had spark of inspiration at the rehearsal dinner the night before, and wrote an alternative ending to her novel that she was much happier with - but it had already been sent to her idol, Isabel Allende with the other ending.
After drama and a huge romantic gesture from Raf - who ended up being arrested - Jane boarded a bus in a nod to the pilot episode, and the entire family arrived a little late but in one piece, and Jane and Rafael were finally joined in matrimony.
What about Petra and J.R?
In one of the most surprising twists, Petra and Jane - who were once mortal enemies, let's be honest - became just as important a love story as Jane and Rafael, and Jane and Michael. Their friendship blossomed into sisterhood, and we've been just as emotionally invested in their love for each other than the other relationships.
But Petra deserves romantic love and happiness too - so when J.R turned up at the wedding (thanks to Rafael), the pair had a real movie-star smooch, decided to put their past behind them and make it work. Yay!
Who were Rafael's parents?
Another of the show's loose ends was tied up in the finale - who were Rafael Solano's parents in Jane The Virgin? Although it's been hinted at and almost confirmed many times, Raf's step-sister Luisa handed over some documents to Jane which contained the information.
And it turns out that his parents were actually just two normal people, who tragically died in a car accident. When he finds out, he's relieved that they weren't part of any crime family or dodgy dealings, and even begins to call Rogelio 'Dad'.
Who is in the cast of Jane The Virgin?

Who is Sin Rostro on Jane The Virgin?

The identity of Sin Rostro was a main plotline for the first season, and it was discovered to be Rose in season one, episode 12 - the stepmother of Rafael Solano and Luisa Alver, as well as Luisa's on-off lover, played by Bridget Regan.
In the season one finale, Sin Rostro has an accomplice steal the newborn baby Mateo from the hospital just hours after his birth, and in the season two opener she had instructed Detective Nadine Hansan - who was now working for her - to swap the baby for a computer chip that contained vital information.
When Rafael's mother Elena is revealed to be the crime lord Mutter, it also becomes apparent that Rose is Elena's step-daughter, and that the pair had been working together. Michael's new detective partner Susanna Barnett was then uncovered as being Rose the whole time in disguise, and she goes on the run after shooting Michael.
Rose is finally caught after being ambushed at the Marbella hotel by the police, and she is the one to tell Rafael that Michael is alive after he visited her in prison to discover the true identity of his parents.
Has Jane The Virgin been cancelled?
Jane The Virgin hasn't been cancelled - rather, showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman always had five seasons in mind for the show. She told Deadline, "It’s some of our best stuff ever. We’re very proud of the episodes.
"I pitched the way it’s going to end when I pitched the show. We’re on the path that was the story I felt like I wanted to tell, so it’s exciting, because we’re getting to that ending."
She also told the New York Times, "When I first thought about the show, I thought it would run four years, and then after the second year, I thought, 'We have enough to take us through five seasons.'
"We started to have those discussions in Season 3. The studio and the network were always really supportive. Mark Pedowitz told me early on, 'Tell me when it ends. Just give me enough notice.' I was really grateful to have that, because you don’t often have that leeway and confidence, and the foresight to be able to plan your ending.
"Gina and I are creative partners, and we talk about everything, and we were on the same page. It’s the ending I pitched when I pitched the show. I couldn’t have pitched them a million of the details that have happened along the way, and it doesn’t have to do so much with the plot and with all the twists and turns. But the overall structure and what I wanted to say about certain things — structurally, that’s built into the ending."
Is Jane The Virgin based on a book?
Jane The Virgin is not based on a book, but is loosely based on a Venezuelan telenovela entitled Juana la virgen. It follows a similar premise regarding the artificial insemination, but there's not many other similarities beyond that.
However, a tie-in novel was written entitled Snow Falling - the name of Jane's novel in the show. It is a historical romance set in Miami in 1902, and was published in November 2017.
Where was Jane The Virgin filmed?
Jane The Virgin was set in Miami, and the Villanueva family make a lot of references to living there in the show. Some scenes were shot at South Beach, Downtown Miami and Miami Beach, and some were also filmed at Calle Ocho festival and the Everglades in Florida.
But most of the series is filmed in Los Angeles at the MBS media Campus near Manhattan Beach in LA.
Is there going to be a Jane The Virgin spin-off?
The CW confirmed that a spin-off was in the works in December 2018, as season five of JTV was set to be the last. Here's everything you need to know about the Jane The Virgin spin-off TV show - Jane The Novela.
