The second season of House of Dragon hasn't even arrived yet, but there's good news for fans. The Game of Thrones spin-off has been confirmed for a third season, just days before season two is set to arrive on Sky and NOW.

Confirming the exciting news, HBO announced that showrunner Ryan Condal will be returning for the third season, along with the franchise author George R.R. Martin.

Speaking about the news, Francesca Orsi from HBO said: "George, Ryan, and the rest of our incredible executive producers, cast, and crew, have reached new heights with the phenomenal second season of House of the Dragon.

"We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular season two, with a scope and scale that is only rivalled by its heart. We could not be more thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again for season three."

Despite season two being still days away from release, it has already become popular amongst critics who have called the series 'breathlessly exciting and gripping tale' and 'the biggest show of the summer'.

While not much is known about the third season, season two is set to arrive on Monday 17th June 2024, with new episodes arriving weekly on Sky and NOW. This time around there will be just eight episodes (season one had 10), and the plot will focus on Dance of the Dragons, otherwise known as the Targaryen civil war.

Speaking to Variety last year, writer Sara Hess hinted the final episode of series two could feature a very brutal scene from the books. She said: "We are currently writing the finale of season two. I don't think you will be disappointed."
