The Script's Danny O'Donoghue breaks down their song 'Inside Out'
It took five years to write
In 2024, The Script released 'Satellites', the first album to be released since the sad passing of their bandmate Mark Sheehan. The album featured several songs which are very relatable to fans, and now lead singer Danny O'Donoghue has opened up about their song 'Inside Out', and how it took five years to write it.
Explaining that he'd had a lyric in his head for a long time, but not found the right song for it, Danny told his fans: "Here's how it took me five years to write a song... The song is called 'Inside Out'.
"I was in a studio with a guy called Steve Mac, one of my favourite guys to write with, and I just recently found out, got diagnosed with dyslexia. It's kind of funny that I'm a writer, but I'm dyslexic.
"So, we were chatting about this, and I just started to pour out that I've been sitting on this lyric for about five years, I put it into many different songs and it never, ever worked."
Danny continued: "The lyric was 'The thing that never changes, is things are going to change.' And with society moving so fast, it's so easy to let all those intrusive thoughts come into your mind and to take over, and instead of that, what I tried to do was to get every single feeling that I've ever felt in these past two years, or my entire life, out into one song.
"So we talk about having... my heart has ADHD, attention deficit, I can't focus on the one thing. So we just tried to bring all of the elements of mental health into one song and try and give in a lighthearted way, that was easy for people to talk about because men are absolutely useless at opening up and talking about mental health.
"So this was our way to bring it to the forefront, to try and make it a bit easier for people to put it into today's conversation. The song is called 'Inside Out'."
Following Danny's video, many fans came forward to express how relatable the song was to them. One commented: 'Lyrically perfect song!!❤️', another said: 'This song is so relatable Describes it perfectly 😍'.
A third commented: 'This is so relatable it’s help me over the past few months I’m also dyslexic find it hard to get out what I feel ❤️and to focus on things'.
