The meanings behind 10 of Miley Cyrus' most successful songs
She's written so many incredible songs 🎶
Miley Cyrus is one of the biggest stars in the world - known not only for her incredible songs, unique voice and songwriting abilities, but also as an actress and former child star. Throughout the years, Miley has had plenty of very successful songs, such as 'Wrecking Ball, 'Malibu', 'The Climb' and 'When I Look At You', but what are the meaning behind the songs?
After releasing huge bangers such as 'Flowers', which amassed plenty of fan theories, and her eighth album 'Endless Summer Vacation', Miley released 'Used To Be Young' along with a TikTok series. She has a very impressive catalogue of hits under her belt, so join us as we delve deeper into the meanings behind her most popular tracks.
'Prisoner' with Dua Lipa
Miley collaborated with ‘One Kiss’ superstar Dua Lipa on their hit ‘Prisoner’. The song was released on 19th November 2020, and peaked at Number 8 the UK Chart. To date, the music video has now surpassed over 117 million views on YouTube.
Despite fans being delighted at the pop superstars collab, ‘Prisoner’ has a rather dark meaning, with the lyrics reflecting what it’s like to be captured in a manipulative and controlling relationship. This can be heard in lyrics such as: ‘Strung out on a feeling, my hands are tied’ and: ‘Locked up, can't get you off my mind, off my mind. Lord knows I tried a million times’.
The song also alludes to a partner constantly pulling them back in, with lyrics such as: ‘You keep makin' it harder to stay, but I still can't run away. I gotta know, why can't you, why can't you just let me go?’
With the track also being released during the COVID-19 lockdown, Miley also added that the lyrics reflect being in quarantine, saying: "What I love about 'Prisoner,' I mean, I think it's also coming at a perfect time for everybody. I mean, in a way...I feel too, I mean, we're just trapped in our emotions right now. I mean, really me, there's no escaping it.
"It's like, 'Locked up, can't get you off my mind.' Anything that you've tried to suppress or compartmentalize at that point, it's coming up. It's yours to own, to own it or release it."

'When I Look At You'
'When I Look At You' was released by Miley Cyrus in 2010 and was the second single from her first EP 'The Time of Our Lives'. The song was used to promote the 2010 coming-of-age film The Last Song, and the video has now had more than 163 million views on YouTube.
The track is undeniably a love song, featuring in The Last Song during a close moment between Miley's character and her love interest (that just so happened to be played by her now ex-husband Liam Hemsworth).
The song is thought to detail a relationship where despite what one person is going through, they have a person who they can always turn to. This can be heard in lyrics such as: 'When the waves are flooding the shore, and I can't find my way home anymore, that's when I look at you'.

'Midnight Sky'
In 2020, Miley Cyrus released her comeback single 'Midnight Sky'. In an interview with us, Miley explained that it was written in two parts. "The idea for the song and the writing, happened at very different times," Miley explained.
Miley went on to reveal her last night out before the Pandemic hit inspired her opening lyrics as it had hundreds of disco balls on the ceiling: 'It's been a long night and the mirror's tellin' me to go home.' From there, it is thought that the lyrics relate to her marriage and divorce from Liam.
With the track being released in August 2020, it wouldn't be too surprising if the lyrics were about her former marriage with Liam, which ended in January of that same year. Lyrics that are thought to directly relate to him include: 'Lotta years went by with my hands tied up in your ropes' and 'I don’t need to be loved by you'.
As a whole, the song is about being fine on your own coming out of a long-term relationship. It also floats the idea that during these times, it's easier to keep your 'head in the clouds'. Lyrics that reflect this include: 'I was born to run, I don’t belong to anyone' and 'I was born to run, I don’t belong to anyone'.
On the song, Miley told Zach Sang: "This song is really just a reflection of everyone kind of having this personal kind of woke moment, I feel like a lot of us are waking up. And you know, the midnight sky, I think is kind of a road that feels like it could be nice to take with our head up in the clouds."
She continued: "So I think that it’s a cool message, to tell people to create the environment and the world that you wanna live in and I think that’s happening on a very political level right now. But also we can do it especially in this quarantine time, in these intimate spaces of our home that we have a place that feels like we’ve created our own environment, our own head in the clouds, so this is mine."
Within the track, you may also notice Miley make a reference to Brody Jenner’s ex Kaitlynn Carter, with whom Miley made headlines with in 2020 when they were spotted kissing on a boat on holiday in Italy. The reference can be heard in the lyrics: 'See my lips on her mouth, everybody’s talkin’ now'.
The popular song now has over a whopping 220 million views on YouTube.

'Adore You'
A stunning melodic tune from Miley, 'Adore You' featured on her fourth album 'Bangerz' - released in 2013. As well as hitting the UK Charts, the video has now amassed over 216 million views.
Unsurprisingly, the song is about Miley's adoration for a certain someone. Declaring her love, the song depicts how the emotions are ever-lasting, heard in lyrics such as: 'I could do this for eternity, you and me'. The lyrics also relate to how Miley and her beau are 'meant to be', with lyrics such as: 'God knew exactly what he was doing when he led me to you'.
Although many think the song is about Miley's ex Liam, it is in fact one of the few songs on the album that were not co-written by the singer. Instead, the song was actually penned by Brooklyn singer-songwriter Stacy Barthe.

'Can't Be Tamed'
Aah - a Miley classic! Released in 2010, 'Can't Be Tamed' was one of Miley's earlier tracks, giving us all a taste of what to expect from the singer as a solo artist, as she began to distance herself from her Disney persona of Hannah Montana.
Showing off her own look, the video shows Miley being watched by crowds as she is trapped inside a bird cage - but as she flourishes, she escapes the bars. This was seen as a metaphor not only showing she 'can't be tamed', but also Miley breaking away from her known persona at the time. Many thought this was Miley 'introducing' herself as a solo artist, beginning the song with the lyrics: 'For those who don't know me, I can get a bit crazy...'
Revolving around female empowerment, Miley is expressing how you can free yourself from anything you think is holding you back. This can be heard in lyrics like: 'I wanna fly I wanna drive I wanna go, I wanna be a part of something I don't know, and if you try to hold me back I might explode'. On top of that, the idea of living freely can be heard in lyrics such as: 'And every tomorrow is a day I never plan'.
The creative video now has over 208 million views on YouTube.

'Jolene'
Although Miley has never released 'Jolene' she performed it live at Wango Tango in 2017. 'Jolene' was originally sung by Miley's godmother, the country music legend Dolly Parton. The YouTube video has now amassed over 481 million views.
Despite this one not being a Miley original, it is an incredibly important song to Dolly. Although the song is about being threatened by another woman, the country singer revealed to NPR that she actually took such a liking to the name Jolene, she decided to write a song about it! She said: "One night, I was on stage, and there was this beautiful little girl - she was probably eight years old at the time.
"She had this beautiful red hair, this beautiful skin, these beautiful green eyes, and she was looking up at me, holding, you know, for an autograph. I said, 'Well, you're the prettiest little thing I ever saw. So what is your name?' And she said, 'Jolene.' And I said, 'Jolene. Jolene. Jolene. Jolene.' I said, 'That is pretty. That sounds like a song. I'm going to write a song about that.'"
From here, Dolly pulled on a real-life experience with an attractive red-headed bank teller, who supposedly flirted with her husband Carl Dean in 1966. At Glastonbury, Dolly joked that she wrote the song when "my husband was spending a little more time with Jolene than I thought he should be". She continued: "I put a stop to that. I got rid of that redhead woman in a hurry. Had it not been for that woman I would never have written 'Jolene' and I wouldn't have made all that money, so thank you, Jolene."
In the lyrics, Dolly can be heard pleading with Jolene to stop flirting with her 'man', with lines such as: 'Jolene, oh, I'm begging of you please don't take my man', 'please don't take him even though you can' and 'you could easily take my man, but you don't know what he means to me'.
Miley has honoured her godmother many times with performances of the hit track, with them even performing the song alongside each other on multiple occasions - most recently at Miley's New Years party!

'Flowers'
'Flowers' was a huge comeback single for Miley when she released it in January 2023. Many fans thought it was written in response to a Bruno Mars song, 'When I Was Your Man' - with theories even suggesting the music video harbours references to her and Liam's former relationship. 'Flowers' has been nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
When it comes to the meaning behind the song, we cannot confirm or deny whether or not it is about Liam. It's fair to say, however, that all of the fan theories are pretty convincing. Check out all of the theories here, as well as a deeper look into the meaning behind the lyrics to 'Flowers'.
All in all, the song is about self-love and empowering individuals to thrive on their own. This can be heard in lyrics such as: 'I can buy myself flowers, I can hold my own hand' and 'I can love me better than you can'.

'The Climb'
In 2009, Miley released 'The Climb' which was featured on the soundtrack for Hannah Montana: The Movie, receiving a GRAMMY nomination for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television, or Other Visual Media.
'The Climb' was a successful song in the UK reaching Number 11, and the music video has now had over 499 million views on YouTube. The video features Miley singing as she's climbing a mountain, interspersed with clips from the film.
When it comes to the meaning behind the lyrics, Miley speaks of how it's not necessarily about where you end up, but the lessons you learn and experiences you go through on the way. Miley speaks of how there are always going to be more things that one wants, however the real importance lies in how we go about getting these things.
This can be heard in the lyrics: 'There's always gonna be another mountain, I'm always gonna wanna make it move. Always gonna be an uphill battle', and with 'the climb' referring to the journey one takes: 'Ain't about what's waiting on the other side, it's the climb'.
The song also highlights the importance of perseverance, and continuing your journey even when things get difficult. This can be heard in lyrics such as:'I gotta keep trying, gotta keep my head held high', 'Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose. Ain't about how fast I get there, ain't about what's waiting on the other side - It's the climb', and 'Keep on moving, keep climbing. Keep the faith, baby, it's all about the climb'.

'Malibu'
Released in 2017, 'Malibu' is Miley's self-professed love song to ex-husband Liam Hemsworth. The song traces the pair's rollercoaster of a relationship, from when they first got together, to their break-up, and then reunion (before their eventual divorce in 2020).
Paying homage to how free she felt in Malibu, where they lived together, Miley thanks Liam with the lyrics: 'I never came to the beach and stood by the ocean. I never sat by the shore under the sun with my feet in the sand. But you brought me here, and I'm happy that you did, ‘cause now I'm as free as birds catching the wind.'
The lyrics see Miley associate her happiness living in Malibu with being with Liam, with lyrics such as: 'Next to you, the sky is more blue in Malibu', and 'And I wanna thank you with all of my heart. It's a brand new start, a dream come true, in Malibu'.
The song also refers to Miley conquering previous fears, and how thanks to coming to Malibu with her then-husband allowed her to come to terms with these. This can be heard in lines such as: 'And sometimes I get so scared of what I can’t understand, but here I am, next to you, the sky is so blue'.
Sadly, the pair divorced three years after the song's release, however the gorgeous song still proves to be one of Miley's most popular, with over 541 million views on YouTube.

'Wrecking Ball'
'Wrecking Ball' was a hugely successful song for Miley Cyrus in 2013, reaching Number 1 around the world, however the music video was particularly controversial after it included clips of Miley sitting naked on a wrecking ball. The video has now had more than 1.2 billion views on YouTube - her most viewed to date!
Despite the song's incredible success, the meaning behind the lyrics is a rather heart-wrenching one. Radiating raw emotion, fear and honesty, the song related to Miley falling fast and hard in love, however she ended up hurt and, well, 'wrecked'. This can be heard in the chorus line: 'I never hit so hard in love, all I wanted was to break your walls. All you ever did was wreck me'.
The wrecking ball metaphor prevalent throughout, Miley speaks of how the relationship 'crumbled'. The lyrics show regret and reflection, as well as intense vulnerability, as Miley describes how the pair fell fast and hard, ending in heartache. This can be heard in lyrics such as: 'I never meant to start a war, I just wanted you to let me in. And instead of using force, I guess I should've let you win', and 'Yeah, I just closed my eyes and swung. Left me crashing in a blazing fall'.
The track is so emotionally raw, it has proven difficult for the star to perform at times. In 2021, while performing at the tailgate show ahead of the Super Bowl, Miley was forced to stop her performance during the track, becoming visibly overwhelmed. She then told the audience: "It never gets easier".
She then explained to the crowd that the song is "about feeling completely broken and shattered", continuing: "I wear a lot of glitter and I wear a lot of armour, and I also wear my heart on my sleeve, and it gets broken a lot."
