Where to watch the original Beetlejuice film

Although the original Beetlejuice film was released back in 1988, it's fair to say it became a cult classic - not only a popular flick for Halloween time, but a family favourite all year round.

If you're wanting to watch the original film online, prior heading to the cinema to watch the new sequel which was released on 6th September, you can now watch it in the UK on Netflix, as well as Prime Video. Of course, you'll need subscriptions to the streaming platforms in order to watch.

Beetlejuice 2 release date

Warner Bros. announced that Beetlejuice 2 will be released on 6th September 2024. That's right, the long-gestating sequel officially hit the big screen just in time for Autumn - and, of course, Halloween!

A post on Warner Bros and director Tim Burton's Instagram page announced the all-important release date in February 2024. The post was captioned: 'Dare you to say it again. #Beetlejuice #Beetlejuice - Only in cinemas September 6.'

What happens in the film?

Prior to the film's release in September 2024, we had some clues here and there from cast members, and director Tim Burton himself...

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tim revealed that the sequel picks up the story decades later, with a death in the family. Tim said: "That's all I will say. There's something that happens that sets things in motion."

When asked whether this could be the death of Lydia Deetz's (Winona Ryder) father, Charles (Jeffrery Jones), Tim coyly said: "We'll see."

Discussing Michael Keaton reprising his role of Beetlejuice, Tim said: "He just got back into it. It was kind of scary for somebody who was maybe not that overly interested in doing it. It was such a beautiful thing for me to see all the cast, but he, sort of like demon possession, just went right back into it.

"Unless it felt right, he had no burning desire to do it. I think we all felt the same way. It only made sense if it had an emotional hook."

From teaser trailers released in the run-up to the film's release, we saw Lydia Deetz enlist the 'help' of Beetlejuice, in an effort to 'save her daughter', who seemingly has ended up in the 'afterlife'.

Michael Keaton also teased that the sequel would improve on the original film, telling Total Film: "(It has) a stronger story", continuing: "There's more of a connection for the audience in terms of the other characters. There's things in here that I wasn't ready for, that are beyond delightful. Instead of saying, ‘I can't wait until this thing shows up,’ or, ‘I just want this thing called Beetlejuice to go nuts.’"

Who is in the cast?

As well as Tim returning to work on the film, starring actors Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder both made their marvellous return. Catherine O'Hara also returned from the original cast, playing Winona's stepmother.

Wednesday star Jenna Ortega also features in the film, as well as American Psycho and The Ten star Justin Theroux.

In February 2024, Jenna spoke about the role for the first time, telling Vanity Fair‘s Hollywood Issue: “I don’t know how much I’m allowed to say, but I am Lydia Deetz’s daughter, so I’ll give that away."

Speaking about the character, she added: "She’s weird, but in a different way and not in the way you’d assume, I would say. The relationship between Lydia and Astrid, my character, is very important. And it’s also really strange because it’s a lot of catching up and putting the pieces together of what’s gone on in Lydia’s life since, which is nice, I think, for anybody who loves the character and is excited to see her again.”

Sharing another teaser trailer of the film to her Instagram in July 2024, we got a small insight into what to expect from Jenna's character - suggesting she and her mother, Lydia, don't have the closest of relationships.

The iconic Willem Dafoe also made his mark on the film, playing the role of Wolf Jackson, as well as Italian actress Monica Bellucci.

Cast posters

In the lead-up to the highly-anticipated sequel, film bosses got more excitement brewing as they released the official cast posters - showing stars such as Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega as their characters Beetlejuice, Lydia Deetz and Astrid Deetz - in the iconic Beetlejuice style.

Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz

Jenna Ortega as Astrid Deetz

Who starred in the original?

The original Beetlejuice film starred Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin, Catherine O'Hara and Jeffrey Jones, and the spooky comedy followed a ghostly couple as they tried to get a living family to move out of their former home.

After the film came out, Tim worked on a number of brilliant titles including The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, The Corpse Bride, Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Despite working on these new movies, the director has often been asked about a Beetlejuice 2 film.

Described by Hot Ones host Sean Evans as the "master of gothic fantasy", Tim also worked on the smash-hit Netflix series Wednesday, which featured Beetlejuice 2 star Jenna Ortega before she landed the role in the new film. Speaking about working with the director, Jenna described to Sean how hands-on Tim was with production, often positioning props himself on film sets, drawing out scenes before filming and even styling her hair himself.

When was the sequel announced?

It was announced in February 2022 that Brad Pitt's production company, Plan B, would be developing Beetlejuice 2 - with Tim later speaking about his involvement in the film.

Tim told Deadline: "Nothing is out of the question. I only know if I’m making a film when I’m actually on the set shooting.

"I try to go back to the root of everything. It springs from a seed and then it grows, rather than out of these statements. I am working on ideas and things but it’s all very early days. We’ll set how it goes."

Which Beetlejuice props were stolen from set?

Back in July 2023, the set was thrown into turmoil after two major props were stolen from the set. On top of that, one of the items in question was even an original, having featured in the timeless 1988 flick.

A state police report revealed that with the help of a pickup truck, thieves managed to remove and steal a large lamppost, complete with a pumpkin decoration. Not only that, but they also reported the theft of a 150-pound abstract art statue.

Highly recognisable, the large piece of abstract art actually appeared in the original 1988 movie as one of Delia Deetz's (played by Catherine O'Hara) pieces. In a tweet released by the Vermont State Police, they wrote: 'We tried saying the name of this stolen statue three times, but it didn't come back! We're investigating the theft of this 150-pound sculpture from the "Beetlejuice 2" set in E. Corinth, along with a lamppost topped with a pumpkin decoration.'
