Pop superstar Selena Gomez has revealed the news to fans that she was forced to have a kidney transplant after suffering with autoimmune disease Lupus.

Selena, who has been quiet on social media over the summer, shared a heartwarming post to her Instagram account and revealed her friend Francia Raisa donated a kidney to her.

Sharing a photo of herself and Francia holding hands in their hospital beds, the 25-year-old wrote, 'I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health.'

She then went on to tell fans she will be sharing the journey with them when she added, 'I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you.'

Selena then publicy thanked everybody who's helped her out including her friend Francia, she wrote, 'Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery. And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis. Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made.'

The NHS describe Lupus as, 'A complex and poorly understood condition that affects many parts of the body. The symptoms can range from mild to life-threatening.'

Back in 2015, Selena revealed she had been through chemotherapy to help her with the condition, telling Billboard,** **“I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke"

Selena then made the decision to end her world tour early as she was suffering from 'depression and anxiety' due to the condition.

Speaking at the time, Selana said, "As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways. I've discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges."

Selena continued: "I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off.

"Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues."

We wish Selena and her brave friend Francia a speedy recovery! ❤️

Despite taking a break from her tour, Selena released her new single 'Bad Liar' back in June and it proved to be a massive hit with fans of the singer.

Selena also made her relationship with The Weeknd official earlier in the year! The loved up pair were first pictured together when they were spotted kissing outside of a restaurant at the beginning of January.

Since then, they have attended a number of red carpet events together and were spotted puppy shopping earlier in the month!
