EXCLUSIVE: Nearly 200 driving arrests in 21 days as PSNI crack down on drink driving
178 drivers across Northern Ireland have been arrested during the PSNIs drink-driving Winter campaign, Downtown Radio & Cool FM can exclusively reveal.
During last year’s campaign, 6,972 roadside breath tests were carried out and 280 people arrested, for drink/drug driving related offences.
This year, they launched their campaign on the 26th of November and up until the 13th of December - just 21 days - they arrested 178 drivers.
142 of the drivers were men the remaining 32 were women.
The PSNI said the arrest figure is provisional and includes excess alcohol, driving whilst unfit, and failing to provide specimen offences.
Speaking at the launch of their campaign, Superintendent Gary Busch said: “For many people it would be unthinkable to get behind the wheel of a car after consuming alcohol or taking drugs however the statistics clearly show that for multiple reasons, too many people are prepared to take the risk or, worse, find it acceptable.
“This year we are asking the public to take two seconds to think about how their actions will impact on others.
“Is it worth losing your licence and potentially your job?
“Can you live with the consequences of causing a life-changing injury to a family member, friend, or another person?"
