It’s not just our ‘cracker’ accents and hilarious phrases that cause confusion sometimes. Living in Northern Ireland, we almost always have an alternative way of saying something, or our own special way of describing it.

We’ve put together a list of some of our quirkiest traits, that just make sense living here in NI.

How many do you do?

Call your parents "mummy" and "daddy" even when you're a grown adult

Say "bye" multiple times before ending a call/zoom meeting

Order a "chip" on a Friday night, knowing you're getting a full portion of chips, not just a singular chip

Sing along with Julian as he reads "But now on the UTV" in a proper thick accent

Drink an excessive amount of tea

Stress about the immersion being left on

Refer to everything as "wee"

Start every conversation with "here"

Finish almost every sentence with "so it is"

When meeting someone new, ask where they're from and what school they went to, instantly try to figure out a mutual friend

Apologise when someone bumps into you in the street

Cannot take a compliment EVER

Use the term 'the big light' for the main light in any room

Call Primark – "PREEMARK"

Go "down the town" when you're heading shopping

Keep your bedding and towels in the hot press

Complain about the weather 24/7
