When Freaky Friday starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan arrived in cinemas two decades ago it made quite the impression. The 2003 film took $160 million at the box office, and won several awards including an MTV Movie Award and Teen Choice awards.

Now, 21 years after that film, which saw Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan playing a mother and daughter who swap bodies, the release date for a sequel has been announced.

When is Freaky Friday 2 out?

Disney has now confirmed the movie will be out in cinemas on 8th August 2025.

In a post on Instagram in October 2024, Disney shared a picture of Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan in character, with the caption 'TGIF. 😱 😱 #FreakierFriday arrives in theaters August 8, 2025!'

Sharing a photo of Jamie Lee and Lindsay on set back in June 2024, Disney wrote on social media: 'The Colemans are back and coming to theaters in 2025! The sequel to Freaky Friday is now in production!' (sic)

Towards the end of August, Jamie-Lee confirmed filming for the second movie was just about complete.

On Friday 16th August, she wrote on Instagram: 'The last FRIDAY of this FREAKIEST FRIDAY or shall I call it CRYDAY. We still have a couple days left next week, but it's winding down and this morning as I arrived at work and looked at the hundreds of people gathering together to make it for the fans, shooting the movie in California, I'm feeling especially grateful to my ULTIMATE movie daughter, @lindsaylohan without whom we could not have made this movie. Ever. She gifted me a @suziekondi shirt after I complimented her on hers and I wore it today in honor of her. Off to wig and work. Thanks for all the @disneyd23 LOVE! It was LEGENDARY!'. (sic)

On Monday 19th August, she then posted a video on set, writing: 'On our last Chad Michael Monday on #freakierfriday I have finally hit my mark!'. (sic)

Is there going to be a Freaky Friday 2?

After Jamie Lee spoke to Variety in 2023 to hint at a return, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed in May 2023 that the sequel IS happening.

Elyse Hollander wrote the screenplay, with filming beginning in June 2024.

In November 2023, Jamie Lee then teased things even further, sharing a photo of herself and co-star Linsday Lohan, alongside the caption: 'Too late. YOU GREW UP and SO BEAUTIFULLY! Well, it's Friday, and the strike is over so hopefully, we can switch places again in the near future! @lindsaylohan @disney'. (sic)

In March 2024, Lindsay broke her silence on the news, telling SiriusXM's Andy Cohen: "I don't want to say too much. And we're both excited. I'm gonna speak for Jamie."

What is the official name of the film?

Although a lot of people are saying Freaky Friday 2, the official name is actually Freakier Friday.

Are Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan going to be in Freaky Friday 2?

The best news is that Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are reprising their roles as Tess and Anna Coleman in the sequel.

Back in February this year, 64-year-old Jamie Lee shared a throwback photo alongside Lindsay on Instagram, writing: 'It's Friday. I'm just sayin! Freaky fingers crossed! @lindsaylohan @disney'. (sic)

Speaking to Variety last year, Jamie Lee Curtis wouldn't confirm the film was officially in the works at the time, however she did say: "It’s going to happen, without saying there’s anything officially happening, I’m looking at you in this moment and saying, 'Of course it’s going to happen.' It’s going to happen."

As reported by Variety, the actress also opened up in November 2022, telling their reporter on the red carpet: "There is no scheduled date, but we’re talking. People are talking. The right people are talking.

"I’m 64 in a week and Lindsay is 36…(A sequel) lends itself so beautifully. We’re both committed to it, and it’s not ours to make. It’s Disney’s to make and I think they’re interested and we’re talking."

Towards the end of filming in August 2024, Lindsay shared a video of the two ladies on set in a car, writing: 'Very demure, Very mindful. 😉 #freakierfriday'. (sic)
